You can deduct promotion costs if they relate to your company, and you expect to gain business from them in the future.
Promotions, on the other hand, can be a little different than advertisements. Promotions include events, activities, sales, or anything that creates awareness for your business.
Unlike an advertisement that shows off your business's offerings, a promotion tries to get customers in the door by providing something.
Let's say you put coupons to your business in your local newspaper. These coupons promote your business by giving customers something of value.
But unlike advertising, coupons aren't a "cost" until/unless they are redeemed. A major manufacturer will issue millions of coupons around the country in every Sunday newspaper flyer. They are not writing off millions of dollars a week in promotional costs for them unless they are actually used. They could write off the small cost of getting these coupons in these flyers, but not the coupon value. So Coke could write off the cost of paying a flunkie to write the code to send out these coupons, but not $1 per coupon sent out.
Maybe there is a loophole that allows them to write it all off initially to take the tax break early based on the potential redemption cost. I really doubt this is the case, but even if so, they would later have to show that they were all used or make up the difference later. Otherwise, there would be noting stopping companies from issuing so many coupons that they know won't get used (like $1 off something that is so overpriced that probably less than 1 in 10,000 would get used...like $1 off SAC) to offset their entire revenue. Or to put it another way, from Coke alone, Shutterfly would never pay taxes!

I did win a koozie in the Olympic IWG and have not received it. I'm really hoping they replace it with a $5 Amazon gift card.
As for the "cooler", I donated that to a church rummage sale. I tried to zip up the cooler & the white liner kept getting caught. I threw in a stuffed Coke polar bear. Such a lucky recipient.

March was one of the better Coke months ever, IMO. These B-day visas, Cedar, Amazon$, Pollo, Wendys, Target and whatever else I'm forgetting...
BUT, we have to wait 8-10 weeks to get it!
The email says:
"Congratulations! You have been selected to receive a prize by registering in the $100 VISA Birthday Sweepstakes administered by HelloWorld for The Coca-Cola Company.
You have won a $100 Visa Prepaid Rewards card.
You can expect to receive your prize within 8-10 weeks after the conclusion of the promotion. Your card will be fulfilled digitally and delivered to this email address. "
Just for the halibut, if anyone wants to send me a message with the number of entries & wins they had, I'd be happy to set up a pie chart, or maybe a bar graph, or a bell-shaped curve!
I don't know if you kept track of that info, but why not?! I'll post over the weekend, since we're supposed to be snow-bound again!
Your info will be kept private, i.e. no sharing of info.
You could message me like this:
Susie, 20 entries, 0 win
Jim Bob, 10 entries, 1 win
Account A, 50 entries, 1 win
Whatever way you'd like.
Somehow, I'll chart it.
nothing on cedar fair and I entered on all family accounts ,putting 25 caps in each, hoping they are not done drawing them all.
