Wool Omnibus - Hugh Howey - Kindle In Motion -$1.20 [amazon.com]
4.6 stars in 13,501 reviews (no, that's not a typo)

This is the story of mankind clawing for survival, of mankind on the edge. The world outside has grown unkind, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are allowed to go outside.

The medical staff seems friendly enough, but something feels…off. As the days pass, Ethan's investigation into the disappearance of his colleagues turns up more questions than answers. Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the world he thought he knew, from the man he thought he was, until he must face a horrifying fact—he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.

All the Birds in the Sky by
Charlie Jane Anders - $2.99
[amazon.com]

Winner of the 2017 Nebula Award for Best Novel
Finalist for the 2017 Hugo Award for Best Novel

"The book is full of quirkiness and playful detail...but there's an overwhelming depth and poignancy to its virtuoso ending." —NPR

From the former editor-in-chief of io9.com, a stunning Nebula Award-winning and Hugo-shortlisted novel about the end of the world—and the beginning of our future

An ancient society of witches and a hipster technological startup go to war in order to prevent the world from tearing itself apart. To further complicate things, each of the groups' most promising followers (Patricia, a brilliant witch and Laurence, an engineering "wunderkind") may just be in love with each other.

As the battle between magic and science wages in San Francisco against the backdrop of international chaos, Laurence and Patricia are forced to choose sides. But their choices will determine the fate of the planet and all mankind.

In a fashion unique to Charlie Jane Anders, All the Birds in the Sky offers a humorous and, at times, heart-breaking exploration of growing up extraordinary in a world filled with cruelty, scientific ingenuity, and magic.

I Am Legend - Richard Matheson - $0.99 [amazon.com]
4.3 stars in 1,557 reviews

Robert Neville has witnessed the end of the world. The entire population has been obliterated by a vampire virus. Somehow, Neville survived. He must now struggle to make sense of everything that has happened and learn to protect himself against the vampires who hunt him constantly. He must, because perhaps there is nothing else human left.

I Am Legend was a major influence in horror and brought a whole new thematic concept to apocalyptic literature. Several humanistic and emotional themes in this book blend the horror genre with traditional fiction: we see Neville as an emotional person, and observe as he suffers bouts of depression, dips into alcoholism and picks up his strength again to fight the vampiric bacteria that has infected (and killed off) most of humankind. Neville soon meets a woman, Ruth, (after three years alone), who seems to be uninfected and a lone survivor. The two become close and he learns from Ruth that the infected have learned to fight the disease and can spend short amounts of time in the daylight, slowly rebuilding strength and society as it was.

The novel was adapted to film in 1964 as The Last Man on Earth, as Omega Man in 1971 and finally as I am Legend in 2007, starring Will Smith.

Illuminae (Book 1) - Amie Kaufman - $1.99 [amazon.com]
4.6 stars in 615 reviews

For fans of Marie Lu comes the first book in an epic series that bends the sci-fi genre into a new dimension.

"A truly beautiful novel that redefines the form." —Victoria Aveyard, bestselling author of Red Queen

This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she'd have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.'

The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that's little more than a speck at the edge of the universe. Now with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to evacuate with a hostile warship in hot pursuit.
'
But their problems are just getting started. A plague has broken out and is mutating with terrifying results; the fleet's AI may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what's really going on. As Kady hacks into a web of data to find the truth, it's clear the only person who can help her is the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more—Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Gemina (Illuminae Bk 2) - Amie Kaufman - $1.99 [amazon.com]
4.7 stars in 306 reviews

A New York Times Bestseller

Brace yourself for GEMINA—the highly anticipated sequel to the book critics called "out-of-this-world awesome"—featuring journal illustrations by bestselling author Marie Lu!

Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna's social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.

The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.

Hanna is the station captain's pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy's most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station's wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren't just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.

But relax. They've totally got this. They hope.

Once again told through a compelling dossier of emails, IMs, classified files, transcripts, and schematics, Gemina raises the stakes of the Illuminae Files, hurling readers into an enthralling new story that will leave them breathless.

Wool is a great read - highly recommend. I've read and re-read it and every time, I still get completely immersed in the story and characters.

If you've never read "I Am Legend" it's well worth picking up. Loved that book. And every single film adaptation broke my heart for botching it. Will Smith most of all.

I read WOOL, SHIFT and DUST when they were free for Prime reading. I also highly recommend WOOL, but be warned if you like it a lot you're going to really want the next 2 in the series and they are not on sale.
I also really liked Hugh Howey's SAND book just fyi

The Pines Trilogy was free back in September, for those that can wait and maybe get it cheaper later.

From what I remember, Wool, Shift & Dust have never cost more than $5.99 but in fact used to cost less until he got so popular. So I would say that $5.99 for the 2nd & 3rd is pretty much the current normal price, not sale prices. Maybe someone else bought these and has more info--as I said I read them free when they were part of Prime reading

The original "I am legend" is an amazing story and is completely different to the film starring Will Smith. Highly recommended, especially for only 99 cents.

Really, this is where you're going to troll?

For those of you who don't know, the novel _I Am Legend_ upon which the crappy move was very loosely based is much, much better, and very, very different. Yeah, both have a vampire apocalypse, but that's about all they have in common. The novel is well worth reading.
