I cut along the seam and slowly cut and ripped it until it was opened all the way to slip out the mattress for the trundle
Unraveled both mattresses and placed them on both beds in cased in their plastic

What provided this info
Invent in a quailty mattress. You get what you pay for. Check out amerisleep. That's what I changed over to from one of these pieces of crap and would not ever turn my back. I laugh at people when they buy these as their primary mattress. You spend 1/3rd of your life on a mattress, why be cheap on something that can impact your life if your not getting a quailty nights sleep.
EDIT : I over read it's for your son. You might be able to get by with cheap mattress but still I would look into a good quailty mattress. Go to a mattress store and lay on some to get a feel. Maybe bring your son with. You could end up replacing the mattress every 3 years or whatever or you can buy a quailty mattress that will easily last you 8+ my parents bought me a mattress when I was 12 and I'm 22 and moved out and had that mattress from that time period until I discoved the wonderful effects of memory foam.
