I've been following my Chase Unlimited Rewards, accumulating points along the way. Recently, I had 10,282 points in my account. When I went to Amazon, where i have this card "linked," I noticed that the site showed I only had $82.25 available. I called Chase and spoke to Customer Service. They stated that I did in fact, have 10,282 points available. That equates to $102.82.
On Feb. 17th, 2018, I purchased some items on Amazon and used my points to make my purchase. It came to $62.54 with tax. Amazon showed $62.54 applied (deducted) to my Chase Unlimited Rewards points. When I went to my Chase Rewards, I saw that 7,855 points was deducted. Upon calling Amazon's Customer Service, they insisted that they only applied the $62.54. I then called Chase again, this time, I got someone who told me the following:
When using Chase Unlimited Rewards Points towards Amazon purchases, they use the formula, 1.25. So, for every $10.00 you use in points, they, Chase, deducts $12.50 from your accumulated points. In this case, being that I used $62.54, with the formula, it came out to $78.55. Chase, in essence, charged me $15.71 additionally, for using the Rewards Points program on Amazon.
Caveat Emptor!!!!
Your best bet is: do NOT use the Chase Unlimited Rewards Points on Amazon. Instead, use your credit card, get the points, and later, if you wish, conver the Rewards Points to cash and apply it to your credit card.
Lesson learned for me.
