if you're someone who keeps their storage in a system for ever (like in a desktop), then go for the 860, if you're just going to put it into a laptop that you'll eventually sell, get the 850.

i keep my storage for ever. or until i buy a bigger one and need to make room by getting rid of a smaller one. i'm still running a Samsung 830 128GB in my rig, plus an 840pro, plus an 850 500gb, plus a corsair 750gb, plus 2 3TB spinners...the 830 needs to go soon (OS drive), will probably replace it with the 840pro (256gb) and buy a 1TB something or other to replace its spot in the game storage queue.

bottom line, any SSD will last you several consumer systems, unless its a crappy drive and has a hardware failure, but writing/media wise, they'll outlast spinners easily.
Meanwhile the 850 EVO sitting in my amazon cart has jumped from 149 to 159. I was really hoping with the introduction of the 860 line, the 850s would go clearance and I could scoop up a 500GB for around 100 bucks. Doesn't look like that will happen any time soon.
You may find this [rockpapershotgun.com]review useful. In a nutshell, the 850 and 860 are very comparable in terms of read/write speeds. Longevity has been increased in the 860 - but unless you are running a server farm, it doesn't really matter which you choose - so go for the less expensive option.

I, for one, absolutely love my 1TB 850 Evo - it has breathed new life into my laptop and will keep it going for another several years at least! Wink

Thanks for the reply. The diff between 850 (this deal) and 860 ($150) is mere $15.

Would you advice to go for the former or the latter 😊

Thanks

Has anyone ordered from this company? I Googled them, and they got really poor reviews. Seems like a good deal, but ... if the company isn't a reputable one ... I may have to pass. Anyone?

urlhasbeenblocked is fine. Google reviews are pretty much meaningless.

Will this work in a 2009 MacBook Pro laptop? Also any info on external storage, my WD MyBook essential that I stored all my info and pics seemed to have failed as the laptop isn't recognizing it and when I tried with another laptop, most of the folders are empty 😰. All my kids pictures, videos, music; documents, work stuff all gone. Any advice?

What's the easiest free software to clone a mechanical HD to this SSD ? I have a 1Tb mechanical drive with about 125Mb of data. Can it be cloned to this 500Gb drive ?

I have no experience with any SSD, and I have been tossing back and forth between this and the Crucial MX500. I haven't seen info on benchmarks about the MX500, and there only seem like a few good reviews, but the 850 has established itself quite well it seems. I am probably over thinking things, but storage drives I try to get as much info as possible before purchasing.

Looks like you can. Data recovery is very tricky, try looking for a data recovery company near to you. I use cloud storage and external drive for valuable docs, which is well under 500gb for what's important to me. But keeping more than 1 recovery media is really your best option.

I have been using this since late 2014 and it's a great SSD. Performs the same after having 14TB written to it which is pretty minimal. I think the 500GB is rated to 150TB written before it starts to degrade.

If you never had an SSD before, any SSD with the storage you need and price budget will do very good. I have a PNY SSD 256GB from an SD deal years back and it's still doing very good as my main OS on my main rig, with huge improvement over the WD 500GB HDD that I had as a main and failed 2 yrs in. I have been following prices and the 500GB SSD and they are under $150 now, so is a good time to buy! Samsung is very reliable memory company, so it's a huge plus. I have 2x2TB Samsung HDDs on a RAID 0 for 7yrs now... Still doing very good!
