Ready Player One

Ready Player One, based on the fantastic Ernest Cline book and directed by Steven Spielberg, is opening on March 29th. The book was one of the best I've read in a long time and this trailer for the movie looks fantastic!

I recommend you read the book or listen to the audio-book, not that you need to before seeing the movie but because it's such a great book it's a joy to read or listen to.

Finished the book I was reading and decided to bump this one up to next on the list. Just a handful of pages in and I'm wanting to dig out my Atari 2600 and look for the Easter Egg in Adventure. I vaguely remember this from back in the day but I don't remember actually finding it.

There was one scene in the trailer that I thought looked a lot like Joust

That's basically what it is. While there's many freaks that can't live out their alternate egos in real life because not everyone can afford a sex change operation or implants, in the virtual world you can have a My Little Pony body with a 10 yr old girl's head. If you want a prime example of the future, look up VRChat videos on Youtube. Despite the name, you don't need a Virtual Reality device to play, it has a 2D version.

Because Finzz said so! Slap

Hubby has read a lot of scifi books that are in the genre you're thinking of but this is the only one he insisted I had to read and he was right. Trying to explain why it's better and different from your expectations would give away too much of the story line. I was thrilled and sad when we finished the audio book.

After reading a few bad reviews I didn't have my hopes up but we went today to see it and I loved it! There were a few differences from the book but wow, there were scenes that blew me away and had both DH and I smiling through the movie. I don't see why some people were down on it.

Small spoiler:

Don't think it was just us, just checked the box office on Variety it's coming in for the weekend at well over the opening weekend estimates...

Quote :
Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One [variety.com]" will take over the domestic box office during Easter weekend with $53 million from 4,234 locations.

"Ready Player One" grossed $17 million on Friday, ahead of early forecasts, which had pegged the pic at around $38 million to $42 million for the Thursday through Sunday period. The film also opened day and date in 62 international markets, and earned roughly $28 million Friday for a foreign total of $42 million. In China, "Ready Player One" debuted at No. 1 with $14 million on Friday for a 60% box office share, marking the third-highest Chinese debut for a Warner Bros. film. Estimates for Saturday place the film's take from China alone at $25.2 million.

I put the book on my Kindle but I'm not sure I will ever watch the movie. Maybe someday down the road long after I read the book since pretty much every movie I've ever watched after reading the book has been a disappointment to me.
After reading the book I decided this will be an exception and I will definitely want to see the movie, if for no other reason than, well, the 80s. laugh out loud

Loved the book. It is one I know I will read again because I'm sure there will be things I didn't catch the first time around that will pop out the next time through. As I started to get a feel for how the 80s references fit in two things came to mind that I really wanted to see and I was thrilled when they both were mentioned. At the moment I can't even recall what the second one was but I'm not going to say what they were here yet anyway. Maybe later after I see if they make the movie. Actually there was a third as well that didn't make an appearance but it was so obscure that I wasn't disappointed in its absence.

I don't know that I will make it to a theater to see the movie but will definitely watch it when I can do so at home.
