Not sure about anyone else, but in my experience the Jinvoo app is sending 300MB a month of data to servers in China over WIFI. I've tested it on two separate occasions and experienced the same thing both times. By contrast, the other smart plug app I've tried had sent less than 5 MB in the same period.

The TuyaSmart app also works for these and I haven't see any background data usage. On Android Oreo 8.1, you can turn off allowing the app to run in the background, and I also add it to Greenify to kill the app as soon as my screen goes off. I denied all permissions since by default it asks for GPS location and other permissions it does not need at all. I have noticed after capturing packets that the app sends your wifi password back, so I created a new guest network to segregate all these devices from my home devices, limited to 5 kB/s so it can't be used for botnets, and forced redirected DNS servers to be OpenDNS to block ads/malware domains. I have not yet had the time to analyze the packets that are being sent, and I plan on doing so to isolate the domains used to control these devices and then switch DNS and firewall to whitelist only.

For anyone else wanting to do this, you have to load the app under your normal wifi, and then when it asks for your wifi password, switch to the limited guest one. You can't take too many precautions with these shady Chinese made devices - my bluetooth scale that only syncs between my scale and the app was updated to request GPS location, wifi password and name, list of all devices on network, list of all running apps and contents of their windows, all browser bookmarks.

Now...if only I could buy all the devices I want and have them all use the same app (in this case, the app is JINVOO).

These are great. I have replaced my expensive wemo plugs with these. Just a note, these are only 2.4ghz but that's not a big deal for most.
