It just depends on what you want to do. If you want to game, go for the i5 due to more per core performance (although this processor is good at gaming also, but many games haven't been optimized for using that many cores). If you are doing video, imaging, or lots of rendering, this one is good. I do my coding homework with this processor along with my video editing and it burns through the tasks easily.

So it will be pretty much same price as 2xxx gen 6-Core. Slower freq but 2 more cores. Good for those who need extra cores.

I think this is a good deal. However the next-gen (mid-cycle refresh) is getting released in 2 weeks. I would assume this version will be lowered in price (as will the 6 cores). Doesn't look like they'll be releasing a direct refresh to the 1800X or the Threadrippers so I wouldn't expect too much of a dip on those (though I think the 2700X might be better than the 1800X so...) I mean at this level (1700s, 1800s, 2700s) it doesn't really matter any one of these will be more than capable at handling anything you throw at it.

What's your goal? If you're focused on multi-threading (video/photo editing) applications or other computation intense goals I'd absolutely choose this. If you're looking to only play games (most of which are just finally starting to utilize multi-core/multi-threading) then the Intel is probably a safe bet. If they're the same price I'd choose this AMD regardless because you'll get the best of both worlds (there isn't a game that would be held up by the 1700) but if Intel is significantly cheaper I'd go with that if you're aim is to game.

Two things to consider: I'd check recent benchmarks to see how the Intel was affected by the meltdown/spectre fix. I have an i7 that was severely hampered by their fix - runs much slower and hotter, coincidentally my chrome keeps crashing recently (no idea if that's related). Second, graphics cards are still really overpriced due to crypto demand/perpetual sell-outs if you think you're going to wait before building your PC I'd wait on buying a processor too. These will keep getting cheaper.

Just want to add you can buy a b360 motherboard for around 70$ and overclock this CPU to atleast 3.8 ghz meanwhile you would need a z370 board with the 8600k to overclock you could go for the newly released cheaper boards but wont br able to overclock, so this is easily the better but price to performance. Also the 8600k doesnt come with cooler.

I have a Dell build that has the 1700x and it's speedy. For the price this is a decent deal.
