The polk psw505 is $200 or less fairly often. Not a bad sub for that price, although $200 doesn't get you a very good sub.
I just bought two of these Elac subs to replace a PSW505, moving down in size, but doubling up, what can I expect from the upgrade? Tighter and more responsive bass? More noticeable in music or movies? What type of music will stepping up to this level of sub really help demonstrate things best? TIA
The psw505 has strong output in the 40-70Hz range, but isn't accurate. Most budget ported subs tend to be strong in the middle range of a typical sub frequency response, but drop off steeply. The Elac has a passive radiator, so it should have a more linear and accurate sound. It likely won't have the maximum output capability of the Polk in that middle range, however.
Would agree with the JBL crapping out, although my Bic f12 crapped out after exactly 5 1/2 years - warranty is 5
