Costco has started selling the Kuna lights at a steep discount ($50) over the manufacturers web site. On top of this they include free 6 months of their premium tier video recordings (30 days) along with smartphone notifications. I appreciate the light\camera integration this product offers. Keep in mind that it is motion activated and does not have night vision. After the free service ends, you can still run with 2 hours video recording for those people like me that don't like monthly fees.

Also that Costco warranty is hard to beat.

While I do like the idea of what Kuna has been doing, often the quality of the cameras included in their products have been a bit disappointing.

For example in this case:
720p HD camera (116-degree diagonal field of view)

So for placement this camera should be within 6 feet of any suspect you want to get a chance at a good ID image of.

The example of the lights by the door would be a good placement.

I'm new to the home security camera market and don't know a lot about the different options out there.

I've been mostly looking at the Blink XT system and the Ring Floodlight security cameras since they seem like the top brands. How does Kuna's product line compare to those companies? Similar? Worse?

I'm OK with a big up-front spend on a system but would like to keep monthly charges minimal if possible.

I've been using this for 1.5yr now. Free 2 hour look back is garbage and you're forced to pay $60 a year for their 7 day plan. I'd say the detection is average at best at if the subject doesn't get close enough, you have a lot of missed detections. I'm about to get a ring pro and use that as a primary recording for main entry and cancel the Kuna plan.

Hi Yeti,

If you want to keep monthly costs down and reliability up, you should consider non-cloud dependent products. ( Ring, Nest, Arlo, and others are all cloud dependent - and I believe Kuna maybe also )

I would recommend going for a good wired IP PoE setup.

Take a look at the following notes ( wikis for more info )

Feel free to take some time to determine what your needs and wants are before jumping in and buying something as there are no killer hot deals going on right now.

It also doesn't have night vision and you almost have to sub to their cloud service because motion vids are only stored for about 2 hrs on the free plan. The software is cool tho—it can distinguish between ppl and vehicles.

Yes but useless service as surveillance... I think the ring has a better free option.
Kuna only gives you "2 hour event look back" meaning you only get 2 hours of recordings.

WITHOUT PREMIUM, YOU ALWAYS GET:
24/7 HD Video Live Feed
Two-Way Talk
Pre-Recorded Messages
Classic Smart Detection
2-Hour Event Look Back
3 Downloads/Month
In-App Sound alarm
Quick 9-1-1 Access
Light Controls
Manual Record
Automated Greetings
Animated Event Thumbnails

the kuna video quality and motion sensor is superior to ring after owning both.

the notifications are always spot on too. they know they have a superior product when it comes to these cloud base security type products and they know it and because of that introduces the biggest con of their product--the very limited time you have access to the videos. and only 3 downloads per month and the higher annual fees for their subscription.

but with fees aside compared to my ring products, its superior in all other aspects. higher quality video, superior motion sensing and higher reliability. even if its only 720p because 1080p in these cloud base security cameras is a HUGE PLACEBO. the resolution is higher but the quality doesn't get any better. only time 1080p and higher res matter is if you get a proper security camera system which are HARD WIRE POE devices that record locally for higher bitrate video.

With tax, delivered price is $151.68 for me. I paid $179 delivered last Dec, directly from Kuna so this definitely is cheaper but, IMHO, tax kills OP's deal...

That said, I scrapped my WeMo switches for these for all my door lights. A pricey solution, but you get free review and download for an hour after notification. I have never paid for their subscription cloud service and it has worked very well for me.

With only 2 hr look back, it is almost useless unless you want to live view.

Been using this since their INDIEGOGO days. I have 6 units (diff style) and only 1 has malfunctioned where they sent me a new one. About 3 years now I think and quality is still pretty good.

Only thing that sucks is there is no night vision. It relies on the bulb that's always on at night and that gives maybe 3 feet distance at the most. Also the recordings are only couple hours. They did have a glitch for a year or so where it showed almost a week but they fixed that now.

Are there any good non cloud-dependent light+cam units out there? I was originally planning to install just cameras, but my lights are old and I wouldn't mind replacing them too.

A quick search only turns up this and the Ring floodlight.

Hi Merchantman,

Saw someone "hack" a IP PoE camera to the bottom of a light fixture

Ah... found it...

Note: I DO NOT recommend the camera he is using, and DO NOT recommend using dome cameras in outdoor settings in general.

You will have to log in to purchase online. It's available in all Costco wholesale stores too. If you are not a member, I am not sure how to can get into a store..
