Changes coming to Moviepass in July

A Message To Our Members:

The revolution is happening now, and it is all thanks to you. In less than a year, three million pioneers joined us on our journey to see more great movies at an unbeatable price. And we want to thank you, our community, for your steadfast support of our company and growth.

In the spirit of innovation and growth, we are now announcing the next phase in the evolution of our product: Demand Pricing.

In the coming weeks, we will roll out three different upgrades to our base $9.95 service for our members.

Bring-A-Guest: MoviePass members will be able to purchase extra tickets to a showing of a movie right through the MoviePass app, so that you can seamlessly reserve seats for you and your friends (at e-ticketing partner theaters) to watch a film even if they aren't MoviePass subscribers. As a benefit, if your friend signs up for MoviePass within 24 hours, we'll refund the entire cost of the ticket!

Peak Pricing: MoviePass is committed to maintaining our low monthly price as we continue to grow rapidly. Rather than raise our prices or limit viewings, our plan has been to develop a new variable pricing system based on the demand for particular showtimes. Under this plan, if the combination of demand for a title, date or part of day is higher, subscribers may be asked to pay a small additional fee depending on the level of demand. You can avoid this peak surcharge by choosing an alternative date or film. We will also soon give subscribers one "peak pass" per month, allowing them to waive a Peak Price surcharge once per month. Annual and Quarterly subscribers will not incur peak pricing until their current subscription term ends and then renews.

Premium Showings: MoviePass members on any plan will soon be able to access RealD 3D, IMAX 2D or 3D, and other Premium Large Format showings of any film for an additional upgrade fee.

These features are being tested currently and will slowly roll out to all our members over the next several weeks.

Our aim is to create the most flexible and cost-efficient product, so that we don't have to simply raise the price on the subscription. We appreciate your flexibility as we evolve our service to keep MoviePass at a low cost. We can't express how much we value all of you for being part of that vision.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
The MoviePass Team

Some people complain "the business behind moviepass may go out of business". Even if you only see one movie and then the company fails, $10 is usually less than the cost of a ticket. Any more after that is pure gravy. And let's say the company fails before you even go to a movie; since you paid with credit card, you just call the cc company and dispute the charge. No loss.

When you buy a movie ticket using the MoviePass Mastercard, you're required to upload a picture of your ticket stub (not receipt) using the mobile app. At least the Android app is a bit unreliable and crashes often, so it's a good idea to save your ticket stub for a few days. When you open the app, you'll be prompted to upload a ticket stub if one has not already been saved -- and you cannot buy your next movie ticket until this is done. It's a small inconvenience, but not a deal-breaker by any means. [YMMV: I have never had to upload a ticket stub, never got notification to do so, and see many movies].

I guess you dont need to see a movie everyday to be positive. Even if you go once a week (4/month) , it is cheaper than buying tickets. It is a good value for people who likes to go often IMO.

I agree with that. I wont find 4 movies that I would like to go every month but just wanted to point out one doesn't have to go everyday to make this worth.

Signed up for the yearly membership and loved the service at first. Now they are changing TOS constantly because they are bleeding money. Stay away if possible.

"unlimited"... except for seeing the same movie more than once. For a significant portion of the population it is not feasible (mileage) to see a new movie every day.

Yea, yea, I know they can change the TOC's whenever they want.

hardly 4 movies per month that are good enough to make this "worth it"... movies are really a shit show these days.

The CEO said, just last week, that he didn't know when (or if) the unlimited plan would come back. My wife and I got in on the unlimited plan back when it was first released, but I'm not sure I can continue to support a company who seemingly has no idea what they're doing.

Okay... so are you going to cancel your membership? Let's be honest, their current business model is unsustainable, for $10/month, they give each subscriber at least $40 of value a month (assuming you watch 1 movie a week).

If I were you, I'd hold on and keep using it until they burn through all their cash, get new investors, or get bought out by someone bigger like Netflix.

They stopped supporting anything below Android version 4.4 some time ago. There was a patch and 4.4 stopped working without them telling you why. It took me over a week to figure out why it stopped. Calls to MoviePass and they didn't know. As far as I know 5 and up still work.

At what pace do they want 2 keep adding new customers. I gotta say... AMC adding the ability to buy $5 tickets for Tuesday online or in the app is competition for them... Still keeping my MP card bcus I bought a year membership.... But with big movie premiers that are sold out for days like Avengers... I'm good with buying that $5 movie ticket ahead of time.

Sure, its a good value if you get what you actually paid for and know what you are getting in to. Many people purchased yearly subscriptions with MP marketing that you can see the same movie more than once. MP retroactively prevent people from seeing the same movie again without warning. Per their own TOS they said they would give 14 days warning of changes/ before a new billing cycle. Since they can change their own TOC's whenever they want, they conveniently removed that from their latest TOC's...

My comments are only intended to inform people what kind of company you are dealing with. Full disclosure, I plan to keep mine until at least the end of the summer blockbuster season (barring any other significant changes). After that, I'll probably go back to my previous theater habits of seeing 1-2 movies a year which I will have plenty of rewards built up to see for free for quite some time.
