To use just ONE of these you need one OTHER MOCA device. It could be the ethernet bridge (ECB2500), it could be the router (MI424WR), it could be the XFinity Gateway (can't remember the model), or it could be a second one of these wifi extenders. You require two devices.

If you choose to go with the ethernet bridge (ECB2500) or a second one of these WCB3000N devices, you do the following. Plug one device via ethernet into your router, and then connect the coax line to the wall. With the second device, all you need to do is plug it in via coax into the wall. That's it. The DHCP from the router will be picked up and the wifi will properly distribute the IP table.

If you choose to go the router route (MI424WR, G1100, or one of the cable modem gateways from XFinity or Arris) all you need to do is setup your router as you normally would (be it as the primary router connected to your cable modem, or as a coax bridge), then connect the coax to the wall. Using the second device, just connect the coax to the wall. And you are done. The second device will pick up the IP table no problem.

In both cases, after you plug it in you can setup the Wifi settings on the WCB3000N as you like...SSID, wifi password, etc. I know there is someway to have this automatically extend your MoCA router wifi network, but i never cared to figure it out as I like to have separate networks.
I don't have a moca adapter, so you are saying if I buy a pair of this, one will act as a Moca adapater if I connect it to my main internet modem/router?

That was my understanding. I hooked 2 of mine up yesterday and didn't immediately get it to work, but also didn't have time to trouble shoot so I will report my results tonight.

Thanks. I also cannot find any reference that it can work like that. But, I ordered a pair anyway. I will wait for your report.

So I basically have the same setup. Someone here mentioned that getting a pair of this would work, but it isn't very clear. If it works, this could probably solve my wifi issue on the 2nd floor of the house.

Yes you can, you can even use auctiontec routers as moca adapters ( I bought a bunch when verzion was selling the refurbs for $3 each), you need to make sure both of these are hooked up to coax if you do not already have a router that uses coax ( one where your router is located, the other where you want the signal to go) the one next to your router will need to be plugged into the router using ethernet cable. It would probably be beneficial to turn off the wireless signal on the one next to your router if you can figure it out as well since it will probably be redundant.

I use moca adapters to run network connectivity to my PoE surveillance cameras, works great if your house is wired with coax but not ethernet in every room

I'm new to the whole MOCA technology.

Question: How do you prevent your home network data from traveling outside your home via coax?

I read that MoCA signal blockers can be placed at the point of entry of the coax system in the home and that they prevent the MoCA signal from leaving the home premises.

Are you guys actively taking precautions to secure your home network and prevent someone from being able to hack your network by intercepting your coax cable?

There are filters you can get which both help with signal leakage and security.

This dates you youngin. Since for many a yar, coax was the way ethernet was delivered. 10base2.
Different coax and connector, though. RG58 with BNC.

if you're on verizon fios, then it's fiber out and no coax shared with neighbor so no need for the MOCA filter.

Thanks for the explanation, I'm still confused though. So if you plug the first one into your router Ethernet and into the cable line, then how do you plug the modem into the cable line? Do you use a cable line splitter, one goes to the modem and the other goes to this wifi extender? Should you plug this wifi extender via Ethernet into the modem or router?

For the second device, is the only option to plug into cable line? I want to put it in the garage to extend wifi range, but there's no cable line there. Are there other options to extend wifi without a cable line requirement?
Yes, you would need to split the line going into your modem. There is a splitter included in the box. Coax from your wall goes to the splitter. One coax from the splitter goes to your modem. The other goes to this extender. The ethernet from your modem goes to your router. One ethernet from your router goes to this extender. Then wherever you want the other connection, coax from your wall goes into another extender. Then connect using WiFi or ethernet or both.

Yes, this is only useful if you have a coax line wherever you want the WiFi extended. If you don't have a coax line, you can look into other options, like powerline networking, WiFi repeaters, mesh networks, or a more powerful router or access point.

For cable internet users, you really dont need to worry. The exterior connection to the hub at the pole is preceded by many amplifiers and filters. Just one amp will nix the coax network. Even when I was living in an apartment complex, my router would pick up a coax signal from another unit, but it would not lock the signal because of how weak it was.

For FiOS users, your cable wiring is cut off from the outside world - Verizon cuts the coax line from the cable company coming into your house to avoid signal interference.

As such, the only way someone is getting onto your coax network is if you have an exposed coax port on the exterior of your home. And even then I wouldn't worry - most criminals in this world don't even know how to operate coax let alone know what MoCA is...lol.

Yes. You need two of them. One to distribute the network, one to receive it where you want it.

There might be a signal amplifier or a filter on your line. The lines need to be clean.

What's the speed of it over coax?
Individual device supports 100 mbps. MoCA 1.1 supports a shared 270 mbps, meaning if you have three devices connecting to a coax network, you can get 100 mbps from each of the two clients at the same time (theoretically), totaling 200 mbps. A fourth device would only provide 70 mbps to that third client since MoCA 1.1 maxes out at 270 mbps. MoCA 2.0 maxes out at a gigabit if you need more speed (although those devices are more expensive)

So for clarification this will work if I have cable internet? Not sure about my modem as I am not home so 2 of these, one at the modem and one by the deadspot (outside deck/backyard - protected from weather). Thanks in advance.
Yes, they will work fine with cable internet. If you have a cable modem gateway that supports MoCA then you only need ONE of these devices (check your model online when you get home).

How do we use this? And what is this for? I have a Comcast modem. Can someone please tell me
You can buy two of these devices (or just one if you have a Comcast XFinity gateway that supports MoCA, TG852G or DPC3941T), connect them both to the coax wiring in your home, then connect one to your router via ethernet, and boom, you get an extended network. You can connect devices, via ethernet to either WCB3000N, or you can connect via WiFi. These are essentially ethernet extenders with WiFi endpoints to extend your wifi network.

"Buyer beware!! This is a Time Warner Cable Rejected Device (No wonder the price is low). Actiontec doesn't even make this model anymore." -- no thanks.
This is a dumb response and it was a dumb review on Amazon. All cable systems will work with MoCA. The reviewer is an idiot. This will work with DOCSIS...from Cox, Comcast, TWC, etc.
Quote from MasonTV View quoted comment :
So if I already have xfinity can I just connect this to a unused coax in another room and it will work?
You need two of these devices to create the network, but essentially yes. However, if you are using an Xfinity gateway that has MoCA all you need to do is enable MoCA in the settings page and you just need ONE of these WCB3000N devices. The DPC3941T supports MoCA as does the TG852G.

That would be my purpose as well. Will this downgrade the speed of the WiFi signal for all other devices? How does this compare to the $99 Fios Extender that Verizon sells?

What is MOCA?
MoCA = Multimedia over Coax Alliance. An alliance of companies dedicated to providing internet/networking via coax. Just a standard for data transmission over coax. It is a very unique name so it is easy to identify supporting devices.

This will not downgrade the wifi since you are not connecting to the wifi the way a wifi extender does. It is an ethernet extender, essentially. You connect to your router via a coax networking and a new wifi network is created at N-300 speed, both 2.4 and 5 ghz.

The wifi extender that Verizon sells is the NEW upgraded version of this model, the WCB6200Q. It is MoCA version 2.0, bonded version, meaning it can do gigabit speeds over coax. However, when paired with a MoCA 1.1 device, while backwards compatible, will only get 1.1 speeds, thus 100 mbps. You need all MoCA 2.0 devices to get the gigabit. If you have the MI424WR router (any rev), you have a MoCA 1.1 device. If you have the G1100 router, you have a 2.0 bonded device. This WCB3000N device is MoCA 1.1 and can only do 100 mbps. The WCB3000N and WCB6200Q are designed the same, an extender, with 2 ethernet ports. Just the 3000 is wifi-N and MoCA 1.1. The 6200 is Wifi-AC and MoCA 2.0.

Can I use this to extend my wifi sinal without connecting any physical cable to my router?
No. These are not wifi extenders. They are essentially ethernet extenders with a wifi end point.

i got one a few weeks ago and it had its own SSID until i plugged an ethernet cable from the extender to the router, then it synced. Mine came with zero instructions and the companion app you read about online doesn't exist anymore. Aside from that it works great for a dual band N extender and comes with two gigabit ethernet ports.
When you did this, was the SSID exactly the same as the one on the main router? I'm worried about my phone or laptop connecting to the slower extender WiFi instead of the main WiFi when in range of both, how can you tell which is which when looking at the networks on your phone or laptop?

Yup. Works perfect as long as you have no amplifiers or filters on the line.
Does it mean that you need to buy 2 to get it connected?

You need at least two MoCA devices to get a network setup. It could be two of these devices, it could be one of these devices and an ethernet-only extender (model ECB2500V), it could be a verizon fios branded MoCA router (models G1100, MI424WR revision I...which are the colors black and red), it could be an Xfinity gateway that supports MoCA (models DPC3941T, TG852G...i also think there is an Arris white colored one you can buy in a store like Target, I just dont remember the model), it could be a MoCA 2.0 device (e.g. WCB6200Q).

You dont necessarily need to connect them to a router to make them function. Just need 2 to create the network - just connect a computer on each end, set them to manual IP, and then you can do some LAN gaming or network sharing. Doing just that would be the equivalent of connecting 2 PC's by a crossover ethernet cable, or 2 ethernet cables to a network switch. Of course the whole intent of coax networking is to distribute an existing internet network over coax...heh.
