The best configuration would be a good quality 2 channel amplifier to run you front/main speakers then let the receiver handle the rest. Receiver wattage specs are rated with only 1 or 2 channels driven at a time. With all channels driven you'd be lucky to get half the rated wattage. The two channel amp will handle the main load of your fronts and the receiver will have a much easier time powering all of your surrounds.

Yamaha doesn't currently make a 2 channel home audio amplifier. They've got some pro stuff, but that isn't necessary. There's plenty of options out there depending on your budget. Amplifiers aren't like receivers that get outdated. You could get a great deal on a quality amp if you don't mind used.

If you have a small room, or don't listen too loud, or have very efficient speakers, you could get away with a small cheaper amp just to power a set of atmos or surround speakers.

Audio is very subjective. You can find a lot of good info on audio forums like AVS on different amplifiers that would work for what budget you come up with.

Insane price on the RX-A3070. Might have to pull the trigger, will I need additional 2 channel yamaha amp receiver for a 11.2 setup?

If so what yamaha 2 channel receiver would I use?

The specs on these look virtually identical except the 3070 has processing (but no amp) for the 10th and 11th channel. If one only needs 9 channels (5.1.4), is there any advantage to the 3070?

I have the 11.2 pioneer and used the extra channels to bi amp my fronts. 5.1.4 is all you need.

You don't have to go with Yamaha, yu can do any of the crown, emotiva or Polk too on channels that process <1% of the movie track.

I've been eyeballing the Monoprice Monolith 7x200 Amp. I'd think any of the series could fit the bill. Currently I'm still running my mains on an old Yamaha M85 paired with the RX-A3000. I'm running 9.2 configuration while the M85 is pushing 3 sets of mains. Yep, that's a total of 15 speakers. I'm so tempted to upgrade but 4K and Atmos are not necessary at this point in time.
