I just bought the phone at a corporate store for 99 + $10 minimum refill as per the rep as I requested to be put on a $2/day plan. There was a $45 plan with Sim card taped to the box. Would I be able to activate that later and use it?

Note that I ported the Sprint free plan number to this device.

I don't think it can be ported or unlocked to any other carrier right away... AT&T prepaid usually requires you to use their service for at least 6 months before you can request to unlock the phone.. I may be wrong... check with the store rep before you buy

I've purchased 2 for Cricket in the past, and they work fine.
Just put your Cricket Sim in it before it is ever turned on.

Locked phones from AT&T the carrier/network will work on any AT&T network carrier without the need for SIM unlocking. These include AT&T postpaid and prepaid, Cricket, H2O, Straight Talk AT&T among others.

So I can just walk into AT&T and buy this phone for $99 no questions asked, right? No need to buy any additional anything?

Yep but you will never be able to unlock it. Using it on mvno or cricket doesn't count towards the 6 months. Also unless activated with the at&t sim, the imei would never stick to the system even if you are on at&t. But why even bother the 4inch screen is darn to small. Just get the 6s the extra .7 inches will be a life saviour.
I'm already an AT&T prepaid customer with an iphone SE, the phone size is exactly what I love about it. I just don't want to be forced into any other nonsense, I just want to buy the phone and walk out and put my sim in it.
