Not really the same. You pay $100 more to get the cellular connectivity plus another $10 a month for service. How often do you go somewhere without your phone and need to use cellular functions on the watch? The one time might be an avid runner but they likely will use a garmin product. Even than they can take a waist belt and bring their phone. Why pay $220 the first year and $120 a year afterwards for the cell service.

Wow, just paid $279 (minus $30 from Amex) at Best Buy yesterday for the 38mm. Looks like I'll need to return and buy at Macy's.

Looks like Macy's is trying to clear out stock before the new watch models are announced in September. Lowest price around at the moment, that's I've seen though for the current models.
