I am putting that in OP.
Made some steak fries as soon as I got home. Put some on the bottom and then used the tier rack. The ones on the tier got burned after 15 mins. The ones on the bottom were great. Better than the oven by far. And so much quicker. 15 mins with no warming up like the oven. Can't wait to test this on different foods and learn the best way to use it.
Oil never would splash on anything. You don't put any significant amount of oil in these. Some foods may cook (read brown/crisp) better with a coating of cooking oil spray, but this is like a convection oven, not a deep fryer.
Also which plastic looks cheap to you? The housing? I don't get your complaint about that.
The housing on all of these is very similar.
Good luck to you in your quest, and in experiencing the joys of air fryers.

If you cook food with fat like chicken wing, it will splash regardless if you coat it with oil or not. With is single pot design, although you get bigger cooking area, you will end up with a greasy unit. You will get more smoke down the road. It is the same issue with traditional oven. It is impossible to clean inside it.

I still see no explanation of your other complaint - No details of cheap plastic you mentioned. Where? I looked this over pretty thoroughly in the store as well and looks just fine as far as any plastic content.
My only minor gripe would be that the inner tray bottom piece will come out with the food if you dump the entire contents at once, instead of removing the food with utensils. Still better imo compared to having to remove a separate inner pan like my current one. Some gripe they would prefer a double pan, but that cuts down on volume as well.
You get what you like. If any grease gets through the air vent holes to the unit, clean it off after use. If you always prefer to cook these greasy splattering foods, I guess you may not prefer to deal with it and that is understandable.
