The description says it can use a Sony NP F550, but I will add, that is the thinnest of the batteries. A longer lasting battery would be a Sony NP F970. Naturally there are generic brands of these batteries that do not cost as much as Sony brands.

These are also the batteries to get if you want to power your camera externally for long shoots. The only thing you will need in addition to those batteries is a dummy battery and battery plate.

Sony Dummy Battery [amazon.com]

Battery Plate [amazon.com]

The links are for a Sony camera. If you shoot with a different brand I would just look for a dummy battery for that brand or maybe the model number of the battery.

Hope that helps.

It looks like you need to also buy battery plates to power it with camera batteries. Anyone know where to get the plates? Or is there some other way to power it in the field?

Thx

I have one like this, it is great but the batteries all don't hold a charge very long. I have tried several brands from Amazon.

Anybody know if there's a way to view the on-screen items through the field monitor? I've tried two and they only transmit the picture but not any relevant information presented (f-stop, aperture, etc)

Batteries seem to be the only real problem but I have a Vagabond Mini power inverter for my PCB monolights. I'm thinking an extension cord is in order and just run it on external power.

I assume it has a 9 or 12 volt input somewhere. This is one advantage of having a separate battery pack instead of built into your flash. I use it in power outages in order to run small LED lights, too.

If you don't know what they are, look them up. People use them for many things besides powering monolights. They're portable AC power, but check your wattage. A light charges quick, no continous load and I forget what the limit is, but it'll handle this monitor with ease, or charge phones and laptops etc. It's Halloween and my grown children go all out so I'm thinking of doing some video this year instead of just photos. Already bought 128GB cards in another deal.

One last thing. There are power inverter projects online that are cheaper than a Vagabond, but do not use those with your lights. They'd be fine for this though and you'd be able to build to suit your in the field wattage needs.

You do not need to buy battery plates, it comes with a built in plate that holds Sony type batteries.

I have this exact model and it transmit all the info you mention, if you have this model and it does not show that information then you probably need to change the settings on your camera, I have a Sony a6000 and there is a button on the back that cycles and displays all the pertinent information.

How's the resolution & clarity look? Does it look pixelated? Planning to use this for manual focus in macro & video stuff.
