What I wish I would have known in linking. A--There is only one button on each unit. I will call it the Test/Silence button since that is what it is labeled. 1--The first unit you turn on becomes the master unit. 2--When you turn on additional units you must hold the Test/Silence button as you are pushing in the battery pack. Only release the Test/Silence button once you have heard a single short beep. This beep should happen within a few seconds. Immediately push the Test/Silence button on the master unit (first unit powered on). This will link the two units. 3--When turning on the 3rd unit hold the Test/Silence button as you push in the battery pack. Again, once you have heard the beep, release and immediately push the Test/Silence button on the master unit (first unit powered on). This will link the 3rd alarm.

Please check local codes, in California you need one smoke detector in every bedroom. In some places they have to be hardwired only.
