There are other successful builds using RX580 but with different encloses on 2017 15 MBPs.
I don't know for sure, but it should work on 2017 15 inch MBP.

Please check egpu.io to make sure. It seems there are some difficulties (but still possible) for 2018 15 MBP because of the T2 chip and the dGPU.

Also can I load a 1080ti into this thing?
It will work with any type of thunderbolt (adapter needed for 1&2)

This is not much more expensive than a good tb3 dock...

For thunderbolt 1/2 Macs you need apples adapter.
For Nvidia cards you need Nvidia web drivers ( currently not released for Mojave)
Works great for gaming on Windows and work on Mac OS.
For older thunderbolt I'd recommend a external monitor for gaming.
As for upgradablity It is a mini enclosure so you either need to modify enclosure or use something else as a case.
Otherwise your stuck with mini cards.
I was able to get this to work but barely.

The cooler was slightly too large so I opted for a 3rd party cooler but if I didn't care or return policy as I was just testing I could have taken a Dremel to some parts of the plastic that were making it not quite fit.

In other words, is the box worth $200?
Thanks
Not for external GPUs
