Found this nice little DeWalt socket and driver set at a local Costco for 29.99 and thought it would be great to throw in the truck for a variety of repairs from working on appliances to minor car work. Like many Costco offerings it is not shown online and may not be available at all locations.

It appears that Slickdealers are really down on the quality of this set (Harbor Freight, really???). Does that apply to all DeWalt hand tools or just this particular set for some reason?
This set has a nice ratchet and 6-point sockets that include 7-19mm (without skipping any sizes) which would cover most automotive work. And while the bit driver and bits are important to have, the included selection is lacking in variety that might be needed. I'm swapping out many of the duplicates to include some allen and torx bits instead - which I already have, but can be purchased really inexpensively if you don't.

just one car, mine for now. as i learn more and get more comfortable with mine i'll work on other cars. while i was researching mechanics tool sets i realized i need only metric for now. most or all sets come with both sae and metric. buying a set might be cheaper but for now i get by with 2-3 metric sockets and a ratchet. can't have too many tools, can't hoard. my 20+ yr old ratchet just broke. i borrowed from someone a quick release one. now i won't go back to a regular. will just buy one but if it's almost the same price as a set then i may as well get a small set with a quick release one. Torx, allen i have but never use them on my car. Use those for bikes, furniture, something else. I think i need open end and close end type and close end ratchet type(?) for tight spaces. never had that one. Looked at walmart, home depot, lowes. No idea what to buy.
Some old school guys hate flex heads, though.
If anything requires more than 200ft/lb to break loose you're going to be using an impact anyway. That's why I don't suggest buying 1/2".
Piece together your own set instead of buying kits.
edit: and buy stuff with easy lifetime warranties that you can just pop into a store to replace.
should i buy something now or wait for lower prices this "holiday season"? seems like the same everyday "low" price on sets will be advertised as "holiday special". same high price, just more hype. doubt individual slightly better quality tools which aren't bundled in sets will be cheaper any time soon.
