So it appears this is the original, and regardless of any updates -- the reviews on Amazon are just absolutely scary. For top-rated reviews, almost every single review is one-star for the first five pages of reviews (though also note that vast majority are from July and August).
When I spoke with Amazon about what the differences were, rep was very vague. She said only minor tweaks had been made, and not to hardware -- but to address the concerns outlined in those scary reviews. The main, and likely only, hardware difference is the remote. She also said that any software updates would go for the initial model as well as what she called the "re-release" on October 31.
Professional reviews are also mixed, with one negative reviewer saying he literally got sick of hearing his own voice because the Cube was so unresponsive ("After a few nights of using the Cube, I began to hate the sound of my own voice" -- Wired). Other professional reviews were positive (e.g., CNET, Tomsguide, PCMag). These professional reviews were from summer 2018.
Also, multiple Amazon and professional reviews pointed out the GPU and quad-core processor, saying they were underpowered and that contributed to lag. Other reviewers said it was fine with no lag. So a really mixed picture. The Mali 450 GPU was released in 2012, and the ARM Cortex-A53 has been around for years (though not necessarily in Amazon's implementation of it -- quad-core and throttled to 1.5 ghz).
Has Amazon fixed issues with software updates? I have no idea. Some of the Amazon reviews state the updates made things worse -- but, again, those reviews are from summer.
Hope this helps.
You can find files much bigger than 2GB and the exact quality of a blu-ray or 4K.
Switching between movies and TV shows is instant, not sure what is taking you several minutes.
If you have the files yourself no need to worry about unsupported addons.
The software is currently being updated to Kodi 18 and is always being updated, seriously what are you talking about?

Nice deal, this is better price than the prime day even after stacking the $35 trade in discount.
Not sure what to do with my trade-in discount now, probably just get the stick on BF if they allow stacking.

The picture is wrong, you can see another picture below that picture on HSN with all the accesssories, and that picture has the correct remote. This is brand new so there is no other version. This is from BestBuy and it's the same incorrect picture, they all use the same set of promo pictures: https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/6251/6251751ld.jpg;maxHeight=640;maxW...
