Not sure if it applies to to these Irwin clamps, but Paul Sellers has a great video on taking cheap aluminum clamps to the next level. Simple, inexpensive, but really effective.

Irwin has been a very good brand from what I've used so if it's the same price I'd definitely take these over HF

OP you legend. I was just about to press purchase on 36" Bessey F-clamps at JC Penney for 11.97. I really wanted 48", and these will be roughly same price after shipping.
