HOW TO UPDATE TO OREO:

Quote from arapahoelapland :
Before following the above instructions (context to instructions: https://slickdeals.net/f/12409510-64gb-motorola-moto-z2-force-edition-at-t-smartphone-100-free-shipping?p=123370042#post123370042) install the official Motorola USB drivers here: https://support.motorola.com/us/en/drivers

That will reduce the chances of bricking.

You can actually allow Lenovo Moto Smart Assist to find and download the AT&T firmware itself too, without mucking around with update.zip.

The instructions above are overall good though. I just recommend the above two modifications to them.

HOW TO UNLOCK:

This is based on several people's experiences. If you just got your phone in the box unopened, try to put in unlock request first through portal (see link below) as a non AT&T customer and use IMEI number on the box. Don't boot up the phone with the sim came with it, and don't order prepaid AT&T sim yet (which requires your IMEI), doing either these may get your request denied. Some people get their phone unlocked by this simple way (EDIT: I can confirm that ATT unlock portal but it is a very big hit or miss. It could take a few days or a few weeks and involves repeated attempts aka sending in many unlock request to ATT. Depends on whoever seems to be in charge of the request you put in). But if it does not work, try the prepaid sim card steps below or use third party unlock (Unlockstone)

From FrannardF, ymmv

Quote from FrannardF :
Re-posting steps for people just getting their phone.

To unlock order a prepaid AT&T sim (free and overnight delivery up through 12/20/18).

Get the cheapest plan (.25 per use or $2 daily).

Request a new phone number.

Put the AT&T prepaid sim in the phone (this will get phone in database).

FYI: DON'T BOOT UP PHONE WITH PREINSTALLED SIM OR ANY OTHER SIM

Add $10 minimum to your prepaid account to have an active account.

Put in unlock request through portal as a non AT&T customer (which means you'll be asked for IMEI number on first page)

On the 2nd page give them your AT&T pre-paid number.

Phone is unlocked and you get AT&T updates.

Both of these sets of Eligibility Requirements are shown on the ATT Unlock Portal link above, BEFORE you select whether you're a current ATT customer or not. They DIFFER -- note the additional requirement in RED in VERSION 1.) This difference may partially explain why unlock results differ for would-be-unlockers with identical situations. Another partial explanation is that the process in non-standardized with HUMAN evaluators making unlock decisions based on incomplete understanding of the true requirements (whatever they really are), biases, negligence, etc.

eBay purchases: YOU CAN NOW LEAVE FEEDBACK! If your order was cancelled, you can leave feedback here (eBay hides cancelled orders from your purchase history)

https://www.ebay.com/fdbk/leave_feedback?

Bootloader is locked for AT&T and Verizon variants, so no rooting if that's your objective/desire.

Further, SIM/GSM-carrier unlock is possible, but may require either paying for thirdparty unlock service or lucking out getting IMEI added to AT&T and unlock via portal, YMMV.

If you know an eBay seller that can reliably unlock the phone, POST LINKS HERE.

Get screen protector since it scratches easily despite being indestructible (not Gorilla glass).

If you're thinking of purchasing this phone trough Motorola with eBay.com, check your account for $5 or $10 coupon possibly issued in the last couple days. I had $10 coupon (TAKETEN) issued to my account yesterday 12/5/18. YMMV.

Total came out to $99.99 - $10 coupon = $89.99 + tax. Nice deal! Thanks OP!

How to remove bloatware.

Here is a windows windows batch file you can put in the same folder wih ADB.EXE and use it to delete all AT&T / Moto bloatware from the phone. I tested it, does not break updates or anything else non-AT&T critical.

Copy the content of this code and insert it into a file with .BAT or .CMD extention and run it from the same folder where Android Platform tools installed with ADB.EXE.
more details: https://www.xda-developers.com/un...ot-access/

Code:

To update to Oreo without an active AT&T sim.

1. Download this official AT&T Oreo firmware to your computer
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=...9939833410

Firmware above should match this version which is the latest AT&T firmware.
https://www.att.com/devicehowto/t...si=N8TH4fU

2. Download Lenovo Moto Smart Assist
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/...s/ds101291

3. Enable USB Debugging on your device usually via settings on your phone and you press on About > Build numerous times until it states Developer settings enabled then you enable ADB USB Debugging there.
https://www.verizonwireless.com/s...se-213471/

4. rename the zip firmware you downloaded in step one to update.zip and place it in the top level of your internal storage of your device from within Windows Explorer you will need to set your phone to USB file transfer mode instead of charging (the default) by pulling the notification area down on your phone and setting the USB mode there.

5. After that is done unplug the USB cable from your PC and plug it back in again.

6. Open the Lenovo Moto Smart Assist in Windows go to Flash it will look for updates and immediately the Update button will be enable because you have an update.zip on your phone. Click Update, let it finish rebooting your phone and whatnot and viola welcome to Android Oreo on your Moto Z2.

==> DO NOT POWER OFF YOUR DEVICE DURING FLASH ==<

Since you my end up with a soft bricked device and will have to find methods on XDA to restore it, but you should be able to do this directly from fastboot.

Begin by pressing the Power button for a few moments to turn off
the Moto Z device
In the next step hold down Volume Down and Power keys for a short while.
Let go of all keys when you see Fastboot Mode.

Once your in fastboot just repeat the steps above.

Note: You will get some security & permission prompts if it is the first time using Smart Assist. Do what it states.

If your device is not detected you might need Motorola Drivers here
https://mega.nz/#!buYjzAaR!3Xx0MH...8dXKuTVZ1I

or here via MDM (Motorola Device Manager) https://support.motorola.com/us/en/drivers

I found this out after numerous attempts with AT&T sim cards and trying to let the update happen in the Lenovo Moto Smart Assist but there was no progress indicator and sometimes the download would fail..but this worked for me.

It's only $1.99 from them directly if you can wait, but that's what I have in the phone and it downloaded all the ATT updates over wifi without issue.

Has anyone been able to get theirs SIM unlocked?

If yes, please post.

AT&T is making me run in circles on Twitter after not getting a confirmation email for the request I put in.

Any reliable paid services that work?

Phones received...submitted unlock requests as non att customer. Enter IMEI number from box. Confirmed both emails from att once unlock requests were submitted. Email said to wait 24hrs for decision after clicking confirm.
