Haven't seen any discussion here related to this so wanted to share to the community.

eBay has started collecting sales and use tax on behalf of sellers for items shipped to Washington state starting January 1, 2019.

Update: From their help page on Taxes [ebay.com], looks like they are going to collect taxes for lot of other states too:

Just be glad you're state didn't retroactively decide to have Paypal send you 1099ys for anything over $700 the entire previous year. MA and VT dropped that xmas present on us in january of 2017, after a closed meeting in December 2017 when they realized they may have spent outside their budget. Suddenly I'm paying income tax for selling a broke friend's iPad for them, all while not having earned any income off of it. As much as I like paying taxes on income, paying income tax on your friend's income is the best. Definitely the GMOT for me. Would have been so boring if they told me before, during, or even up until the last day of the tax year, because I would have known to keep orderly records of details like how much I paid for Madden 15 so I don't get away with the huge net loss I took when it barely sold for the cost of ebay fees and postage.

My favorite part was spending days on end getting my receipts and expenses together and getting to make sense of it all because I received over $700 on paypal throughout the year. The most expensive version of TurboTax found enough credits to essentially offset any tax owed to VT, so I got to choose between paying a fortune for tax software for selling a couple things for my friends, or paying the state hundreds of dollars for something I made zero net profit off of. Good times

This is a horrible news. When ebay emails you about this kind of things. Please call your representatives or email that at least about not to charging taxes out of state. Would be really hectic for the sellers also.

The sellers don't pay the tax it's added to the buyers total by ebay then ebay pays the state.

why would you be worried about buying tax software for selling stuff that you made no profit on. Making that little qualifies as a hobby ..
