Sand also warps sheet metal pretty quickly too, soda will keep it from curling up on you.

I am planning to sandblast some body panels, I know I need to keep it light and spread it out. Would soda be a good alternative? I have heard horror stories of impaired adhesion due to soda blasting embedding something on the material that is being worked on.

The soda doesn't embed in the surface of the panel, but it does leave a residue that needs to be cleaned off with PrepAll or other general auto-body surface cleaner.

The other issue as opposed to more abrasive methods of paint removal is that as I mentioned before that soda doesn't texturize the base material, so there is no "key" for the paint to bond to. After cleaning you either need to use a DA sander to give the surface of the metal some roughness, or use a self-etching primer. The same is true if you use a chemical paint strip, you get to the bare metal, but it doesn't prepare the bare metal to accept the new paint and primer.

Most of the issues with soda blasting and body work is the result of unfamiliarity of the process or an understanding of the surfaces. Its not like the people that work in body shops have PhDs.

I'd go with self etching primer, although toxic make sure you are WELL VENTILATED because cyanide will kill you!

I would definately use soda unless what you're blasting has many coats, even then I'd still lean on soda as opposed to sand, but thats just my opinion.

Wow, how does this thread have 5 pages now?

I'll probably do chemical stripping first, DA for the large surfaces, and sand or soda in the contours. One reason I liked the idea of sand is that it will show me where the metal is rusted through by punching through it and making it easy to see. If I can find the soda blaster on clearance though, I'll give it a shot!

There's some sort of auto-shutoff for SD threads to keep them from getting too long. This is now posted at the top of the thread:

Here's what the people working at HF think of all of us:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Har...2102125479

Some of it seems to be legit stuff about the legal issues between the founder and his son and the changes that the company is seeing (which don't sound smart to me). But a lot of it is just stupid bitching by the, shall we say, "lower" end of the HF employee quality spectrum. Like the gal complaining that an old person is buying saw or that people are upset about the coupon changes.

Interesting read though.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't mind seeing more pictures of that bitchy chica.

Picked up the sodablaster at the Raleigh, NC store for $37 because I had no 20% off on me at the time! Thanks for the tip, and they had about 4 left if anyone else is interested. Can anyone point me to a good source of blasting media?

She must have heard you, looks like she changed her profile photo. Maybe some of those idiots have finally figured out that their names show up on google on that page. Probably not since they keep posting there. I can't imagine hiring someone if you googled their name and found them slagging their former bosses/company/customers. If only for the fact that they obviously aren't smart enough to do their complaining somewhere anonymous.

Lesson to everyone, watch where your name shows up online.

10lb soda blaster on clearance. [harborfreight.com] Reg $99, on clearance at multiple stores for $35... was able to use a 20% coupon for a total of $28.
Thanks for the heads up on this. Been looking at them but never pulled the trigger. Confirmed at my store for $32. Tag still showed $99 on the shelf.

Has anyone used any of the HF "security" cameras? My wife wants a "chicken cam" for her birds and this seems like a cheap way to get her off my back.

Here's some coupons advertising a "grand opening" event in Washington. However, I'm pretty sure they are the same as the current "facebook" coupons.
