The 1700 was an upgrade in terms of the core count and frame rate stability in games (I don't use it for productivity). In general, it seems to be able to handle a bunch of tasks without being at 95% utilization like my 2500k. So yay, that's good.
The bad? Mine will not overclock particularly well. The IPC is only 10-15% stronger than my Sandy Bridge. In some games, I get the exact same frame rates (not very well). If you need a strong IPC CPU for CPU bound games, then a Ryzen 1700 is not for you. Wait for Zen 2 or get an Intel. Don't hate me. Just giving you the good and the bad. I'll be upgrading to a Zen 2 since I believe in team Red.
The launch CPUs were a nice proof of concept, but were not quite there. Make no mistake you do get a lot of CPU for $130.
