Wrong. Just turn them down. Dual subs isn't about loudness or volume, it's about smoothing bass response across more seats. With properly placed dual subs, u could actually experience quieter overall bass! It's true.
Over at AVS Forum there is a whole thread there dedicated to subwoofers where many people have ran tests and calibrations with decent equipment. You can go there to check it out if you want to, but word of warning.....you may get sucked in and end up spending a whole lot of money on some awesome subwoofers if you go over there. Wink It gets pretty difficult to get a good smooth response with 2 drastically different subs. Sealed and ported perform very differently (ported tend to play lower and louder if tuned properly, and sealed tend to have better mid-bass but falls off on the low end without a ton of equalization and power), which makes them difficult to marry in the same setup.
I would rather get sub from SVS just because they stand behind their product. I bought used subwoofer from craiglist, and SVS sent me replacement amplifier for free even though it was older than 5 years. Monoprice is terrible if you have any issues.

If I have a sealed sub, can I add a second ported sub? Would it sound distorted? TIA

Excellent but too strong for a dual setup. My neighbors won't be too happy

It's not recommended to mix subs

Would what sound distorted? Your sealed sub? It depends on many things...the subs capability, room placement, etc. Some sealed subs can out perform some ported subs ...think sealed long throw 15" with 1000 watts vs ported 10" sub with 100 watts. As long as your are able to adjust the phase of one of the subs, you can mix any 2 subs, but the overall system will be limited to the lesser subs' capabilities.

It is "preferred" to have 2 or more subs of "equal capability". Name brands don't matter. As long as they perform similarly that is all that matters. Mixing two subs with different performance capabilities isn't the best case scenario but can easily be made to work, but the system will be limited by the lesser subs' capabilities.

I have mixed subs (SVS)... it works... probably not ideal but I have space limitations or I would go dual ported subs.

U can mix any subs. One sub should have the capability of having adjustable phase. The system will be limited to the lesser subs' capabilities.
