I guess im more lucky than I know getting one.. I was actually already at my usual store and it said they had 1 in stock, I figured, nope.. but guy went back and found it easily.
I found out they also had centipede for 75 at most stores, and few friends/family wanted a unit.
So today was in a area with a walmart said they had one of each.. no and no.
I then drove 20 miles (not just for arcade units but they was suppose to have 2 24'' monitors on final clearance for $13) well they might actually have them but it ended up being the "cage" in the back with the monitors is jammed shut and a work order has been logged for over a week for them to fix it..wut?
Ok well maybe they have that QTY: 1 centipede unit then? nope.
ok well im already 20 miles out of my way.. I look for another walmart with stock as a hail marry I can hit sorta kinda on the way back home.
So while Im looking I realized I told the guy to look for Ateroids but this particular wamart says they 150 opps, I told them the wrong one.. but wait.. it says they have 2? and they still came back empty handed?.. ok I go back in.. tell them the mistake ask to recheck for centipede.. nope again.. so out of 3 units they're suppose to have they actually have zero? wtf how do these things walk out the door at over 50lbs? and 4ft long?
So im in the car looking for last great hope. I find one that's about 10 miles out of the way headed home... 2 units of Asteroid.. I get lucky.. there is a guy stocking the shelves (it's around 9pm)
Im thinking.. ok .. this is my guy.. he stocks, he knows.
He goes back and looks.. nope.. no Asteroids... WTF.. I ask him to do a inventory,check, I've already got a bar code ready on my phone.. e-z-p-z for him to check...
He tells me it probably DOES say they have 2 but they're missing.. I said how does something this size and weight "walk off"? and he says.. you'd be surprised.. it's a real problem in their store.. and yes I can beleive that.. not a good neighborhood, extra hi-viz portable camera towers in parking lot and the only walmart I've seen with a GUARD where the greeter normally is.
He said they try to keep on top of it but a lot of stuff walk off.
gah.. crazy.. 3 stores, 7 possible units and I walk away with zero
absolutely nuts.
At least I got one, and It's a bit frustrating that the one store I actually found one was the one I put zero effort into.
However I want Final Fight or SF2 cabinet not these.
I had the SF2 one, thought I got it free because they didn't charge me until weeks after delivery. Once they did charge me I decided to return it. However I really liked the unit, don't let the naysayers fool you they are really cool (although I would swap out the poor quality joysticks personally). And my friends kids STILL ask about them months later "why did you return that?". I just feel like my personal buy price is more like $100, or maybe $150-200. Not 300 at this time.
As said there's a great modding community around these too. You can put in a raspberry Pi, do all kinds of custom work etc.
Why do these go on "clearance" at WM every few weeks seemingly? Cant a thing only go on clearance once?
Edit: thinking about getting the centipede cab (BS says a local WM has 4 at 75, if they exist of course), then buying the replacement wood top part I saw somewhere for 25, then modding that. Cheap way to do a Pi mod. However half the coolness is the artwork, and MK or SF art is cool, centipede not so much in my book.
Edit 2: Looks like the centipede cab has the screen turned vertically, so it would not be a good modding candidate anyway :/
