Are these portables still relevant? Most kids on smart phones now?
Yes it is. I asked the same question with an assumption that the 2/3DS are dead and I got bombarded with a "you're wrong, pal" response here

We got a 2DS from the last deal and it's great. Spotless and well packed. Only odd thing was the off-color stylus, but nothing serious. Soooo many games for this thing, almost all under $30 retail (or $5-$10 used)

They're very inexpensive to own, easy to play, invaluable product partly because of Nintendo which known for making quality form of entertainment. Additionally, their1st party physical games hold it value well over time,

And....

***drum roll****

ergonomically portable!

It's an amazing piece of Nintendo history. The library is literally giant. I wish I had a 2ds xl, so I can't confirm it, but the new 3ds can play snes games as well.

Not much. I mean the pure 2DS is a bit less portable due to form factor, but Nintendo kind of gave up on 3D and some of the later big games don't even make use of the feature. Now of course your losing screen size vs either XL, and that can be a bid deal. It's hard to go back to the smaller screen once you get used to the larger one. The New also matters and a couple games either don't play on the non "New" hardware (xenoblade) or play substantially worse (hyrule warriors).

Personally not a fan of the 2DS models, but the New 2DS/3DS are great. They protect their own screens in the folded mode, but I still prefer to have a carry case to protect it when not in use.

The 3D functionality is neat at first, but I quickly turned it off. It adjusts the image based on where it detects you to be viewing from and normally does a decent job, but if you're sitting at an angle or not sitting still while playing it will frequently appear blurry and may even give you headaches. There is a physical slider to reduce the 3D intensity or entirely disable the 3D effect which is great.

One thing I don't like about these is that the battery is internal and I don't know if it can be replaced. So far, I haven't had any issues with it holding a charge, but batteries don't last forever. I'm considering getting a New 2DS from this deal just as a backup.

Otherwise, it's a great device and there are some amazing games, both physical and digital. There's even a few free games available through the Nintendo digital store. It doesn't require a paid subscription for multiplayer.
