Honestly, it depends on if you are hiking or climbing. Probably not good for climbing, but hiking? Ripstop, lightweight, 7" rise, sure!

I'm actually wearing a J Crew short sleeve button up right now! J Crew has some of the better slim fit shirts if you're broad shouldered and slim wasted. I'm a 42" shoulder and 30" waist and I basically have to get all of my shirts with darts (to slim down the waist, shoulders are fine) with most J Crew shirts, I can get away without darts. If you're a 32-34" waist, a slim medium should be a great fit. Another issue with slim fit shirts I find are that the arms are too tight/skinny but J Crews are generally better in that area as well, they're fairly good fitting/comfortable.

Sounds good, Thanks for the reply! I am a 32-34 waist actually haha so I think I'll get a slim medium. I noticed in some short sleeve button ups they fit way to tight for me in a medium but mediums in the J Crews sound like they should fit perfectly
