First of all, you will need a CVS ExtraCare card. This is obtained easily at any store at the register. Some will ask you to fill out the form then and there, others will just give you the card and ask you to return the form later.
Once you have the card, you can now start CVSing
The biggest thing to understand is that CVS uses a promotional program called "ExtraCare Bucks" (commonly abbreviated as ECBs.) These print out on your receipt immediately once you purchase an item offering them; almost like an instant-rebate you get at the register. You can turn around and use them anytime on almost anything in the store, except for alcohol, cigarettes, and gift cards.
Often, CVS advertises items as "Free after ECB" – For example, throughout the month of November, CVS has Crest Pro Health Whitening Toothpaste in 4.2 oz size, for free after ECB. The cost is $3.49, but you get $3.49 back instantly on your receipt. The best part is that there are often coupons available that can actually help you earn money… like for the above toothpaste, there are $1 off coupons available, meaning the item would be $2.49, but you get $3.49 in ECBs back. The limit on this toothpaste for this month is 2. So if you wanted to start off small to get into CVSing, the thing to do would be to buy one toothpaste in the first transaction (and use a coupon if you have one, so that you either pay $3.49 or $2.49 in cash), then use the $3.49 ECBs you get back from that first transaction to pay for the second tube of toothpaste, and again, receive $3.49 more in ECBs.
The trick now is to roll your ECBs so that you rarely pay more than maybe a dollar or two in tax on transactions, instead using your ECBs from previous transactions… then earning more to keep doing the same. It's a cycle (and a game/addiction to some, lol.)

I try to go with the least amount of beeps though. If I have a big coupon order I don't mind beeps since the cashier most like just wants to get through my stack.
I'm writing about a problem I had using coupons at one of your stores last night. This was the store in XXXX, WA on XXth street. Pace has a great internet coupon they are currently offering through SmartSource for $4 off any Pace item.
I was told about the coupon by a friend who has used it at a Safeway store with no problem and friends in other parts of the country also reported using it without issue. However the cashier would not take the coupons and went to get the manager on duty at this Safeway store who told me it was against your corporate policy. He stated that it is Safeway policy that all internet coupons must be printed in color and may not be for more than half the value of the item. Based on what I've heard from other stores, I believe he was lying to me and making up his own policies. Which is true?
Furthermore, he was rather insulting. Insinuating I was photocopying coupons because they were in black and white, despite the fact that each of the three had a unique bar-code number.
I hope Safeway realizes that in this economy, a lot of shoppers are turning to manufacturer coupons. Manufacturer's, in turn, are providing more internet coupons as they are more cost effective. If Safeway becomes known as a non coupon-friendly store, requiring shoppers to use their color ink and not allowing use of any of the really good coupons, many like myself will turn elsewhere to do all our shopping.
