Is it worth buying an HP touchpad today?

3,720 1,163 August 20, 2019 at 10:31 AM
Someone is offering me a used HP touchpad with no charger for $20. Is it worth buying? Im not planning to do much with it. I want it for when I go away to have some basic internet and email access without the need to carry a laptop with me. I read android 9 was recently installed on it with some functionality missing.

Get a cheap refurb (or even new) Fire tablet. Almost as cheap, but with much more capability. And you wouldn't have to go out and buy a charger.

The Touchpad is ancient technology.

What makes the fire tablet better? I took my laptop with me last time and only used it to browse the internet to book a place to stay and check my email. It's easier than doing it on a phone. How much are refrub fires?

The old Touchpad is slow, probably can't handle updated software, you won't get a charger with it so you'll have to spend another $10+ for that, and the old battery likely has limited life left.

You can get pretty new Fire tablets for $40 or a bit more. You'll have to do the googling on that yourself.

A fairly new machine will be MUCH better that a really really old, discontinued model. You'd only lose $20 if it bricked soon, but why even sink that into outdated, slow technology?

Good luck!

Lol @ HP Touchpad fire sale. Man that was a while ago, one of those key moments in the history of SD.

The answer to your question is NO!

I will look for something else. Im not a fan of being locked into Amazon's OS. Youre right about the battery and charger. Maybe I could find some cheap android tablet.

Actually tablets kind of suck. Maybe you should just save for a 2 in 1(tablet notebook).

I have had a fire tablet for several years. It's far outlasted any of the cheap tablets I've tired. Those seem to last about a month or so, where the Fire Tablet has been 3+ years or longer.

I use my iPad all the time. Read the news on it, read books on it, answer email on it, surf the web on it....

I think OP is looking for something cheap and reliable to use occasionally, which is why I suggested a cheap Fire. It'll work right outta the box, and is essentially subsidized by Amazon so the price is really low.

I mean, if all you're going to do with it is light internet browsing and email, why would you care about being locked into the Amazon OS?

LMAO

I've still got that thread sticky'd....

Never did get an order to go through, kept timing out or getting cancelled.

Yes. I am looking for something to use for like a week out of the year. Its really basic use and to avoid having to carry around an expensive laptop or something when I travel. Anything that won't fail me that could play Spotify, let me look up info about the places I want to visit that day, check email, Netflix. The rest of the year it would collect dust.

Thanks! I will look at the amazon fire as well Smilie

Just in case something I am looking up requires me or is easier to use their app.

AFAIK you can still sideload the Play store onto a Fire.
