Don't bother with fancy/expensive knife blocks. They're just for decoration.

Joseph Joseph DrawerStore for $9 has the highest storage density and is slim/compact so it easily fits into any drawer.

The metal & glass base is about 9.5" tall. With the knives in the base, it's about 15" tall. The bread knife and chef's knife have a blade about 8" long, so you'll need a minimum of 23" if you intend to pull the knives out of the base, ideally much more if you don't want it to be super awkward.

Best to find a spot without cabinets above. I have mine pulled away from the cabinets along the edge where the counter meets a wall.
I have these and they are a good set. They do stand tall so if you don't have the room you'll always have to pull the whole block out to lift them out.

How tall exactly? I have a 19" tall space between my counter and cabinets. The listing says it's 15" tall but that be just the block...

Thanks for answering, I'm going to pass on this set for now. I already have a blender that's too tight in that space and it is annoying to think of another tool I'd have to maneuver around.

+1 Exactly the same experience for me. Great set, but sitting on my countertop with cabinets hung above at a normal height, I have to pull the set out to get a knife out. I'd still recommend the set, though...especially over a giant block set where all you'll really ever use are 3-4 of the knives...unless you're Emeril Lagasse or some ish...BAM!
