I just noticed this evening I was being charged a $1.00 "bag fee" when I attempted to order items on the Target app for in-store pick-up. I've never been charged this fee before and was wondering if this is something new? In case it is, I thought I would put the information out there for everyone else. Does anyone have any further information about this? I couldn't find an announcement or additional information online.

Possibly California only?

I also just created an account to discuss this. I was about to purchase 2 items totaling 18.28 (1 bottle of body wash and toilet paper), before refreshing the app, they were attempting to charge a $5 bag fee and $6.42 in tax :X (I have screenshots)

After refreshing I see that the bag fee has reduced to $2, after refreshing for a 3rd time, the bag fee has reduced to $1 with tax being $2.42. I am so incredibly confused right now.

Make sure to double check the final amount charged. The bag fee disappeared for me too, however it was included in the final total without it showing on the receipt. :/

If you scroll all the way down in your cart, it says that you can get refunded if you choose not to use any bags after picking up your order.

Oooooh that's new but good. Now there's something to show the clerk, I was charged even though my item was too big for a bag and he said he couldn't refund the fee. Thank you!

I just hope the clerks are trained to do the refund though. Otherwise you'd be waiting there forever to get that $1. You can show them that page but that doesn't mean they know what they are doing at the store. Hopefully everyone is on the same page.

Trying to place an order for an item of $8.71. In additional to the $1 bag fee, they want to charge me $1.68 tax however the tax rate is 8% here. WTF is going on?

Order pickup
Subtotal (1 item) $8.71
Delivery Free
Fees $1.00 Bag fee**
Estimated tax $1.68 Delivery & tax for 92xxx
Total $10.39

EDIT: I think I figured it out, the tax is based on the original MSRP of $19.99 plus the $1 bag fee. This is really fxxxed up...
Actually – that particular part of it is their failure to itemize correctly – they are not actually over charging you for tax. The total you were charged was 68 cents plus $1 bag = 8.71 + 1.68 = 10.39. The way the app lays it out without proper use of parentheses etc. makes it look even worse. However, that bag fee itself is way too much. They should have a better system. I don't mind paying the $.10 per bag because it's been that way for years, but automatically making it one dollar and then have the rest refunded to you days and days later just seems wrong, very wrong.

everyone should just contact target to complain about this. target order system is actually a big mess. For one order that I actually checked the final charge (i seldom check), they put some random $1.xx charge to me without any notice to me. I have to contact them at least twice to get it back.

Just take the 10 bags and throw them in the trash, this will show Target that their policy is backfiring.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and the fee is $2.50!! CRAZY! Wish there was a way to opt out of getting a bag.

$5 for the SF Bay Area (San Mateo). Why don't they just keep it aside in trays and I'll bring my own bag!

10 7 2019 Los Angeles, Ca. I just got off the Phone with Target Customer Service, online Specialist Gabby, and she said this is the new policy. SHe would not let me speak with anyone higher up to question the rationale of these charges. The only way around it is to go into store and purchase or have everything delivered. The issue with that is NOT ALL items are available IN the store OR available for Delivery. There was no offer to reimburse the BAG FEE. Yesterday, for the same items in my cart for, Up & Up Eye drops $2.97, Fructis Serum $4.99 & 1 Roll of Smartly paper towels $0.65, a keyboard that can only be delivered $17.99 items/tax total $29.04. Additional BAG FEE YESTERDAY $1. TODAY it is $2. Target has always touted they are the best prices, most afordable shopping. So, WHY would ANYONE want to pay ANY BAG FEE, when last week the bags in the store were TEN CENTS? Personally, I WILL NOT HAVE THAT MONEY EXTORTED for being told "PLEASE ORDER ONLINE FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, PICKUP IN STORE!!" I WILL NOT BE BUYING FROM TARGET ANYMORE. This Policy is Unjustified & it is a RIP OFF no matter how you describe it. I am only ONE of 1000000s who shopped there and USED to order online. In Mar 2019 their ONLINE ORDERS/BUSINESS surpassed $5 BILLION in last year's 4th Quarter, reported in Mar 2019, and online orders again increased 42% by MAY 2019. So GREED is definitely rearing its ugly head. BOYCOTT TARGET.

$2 for me in the LA area. No option of opting out or getting it refunded. When I picked up my order yesterday, he did say that he's getting a lot of complaints but that it's a corporate policy. According to him, they are not supposed to refund the bag fee, because they put a label on the bag once your order is processed, so the bag can't be used again.

When I did a chat with Target CS online, they claimed that the fee is supposed to be refunded if you decline the bags. This just feels like a giant money grab. It would be one thing if the fee bore any resemblance to reality (most stores charge 10 cents), but at $2+ per order, it's just a profit center. I will no longer be bothering with in-store pickup.

I'm being charged a $2 bag fee for ordering a order total of $15...and it clearly states that this fee can be refunded if you decline to use a bag when picking up. So if they aren't honoring that claim when declining to use a bag, I smell something fishy
