Does anyone know if the cooling works well or is it basically just a fan? Need something for my son's room but blowing hot air around won't help.

Cooling mode is just a fan. Any active cooler would be much larger, needing either a water source for evaporation, or a place to dump the excess heat generated from the cooling process.

FYI, this model will cease to exist in the near future. Per the manufacturer's product page: "We no longer sell heating and cooling fans, but you can heat, cool and purify with the Dyson purifiers." The company still exists, and the replacement models look basically identical with the addition of an air filter, so I wouldn't worry about warranty or support.

It's just a fan. There is no compressor, freon etc in the Dyson AM09

Not sure about the heating feature because I bought it for the cooling feature, and a standing oscillating fan works better. It only cools the area directly in front of it. It also doesn't really cool the area; it doesn't work well as a fan. I bought it at Target for maybe $175 a month ago and returned it for a $30 regular fan.

The HP01 is better since it's also a purifier right? This one is just fan and heater?
