Was close to grabbing a Samsung CRG90 here locally for $1k, but decided to pass. The prices keep on dropping on ultrawides, and the screen tech is rapidly maturing to eliminate previous caveats.
While I'm sure this is a nice display... I guess I'm not connecting the dots as to why it's worth $1k.
Yeah, it's 34", 3440x1440, G-Sync (Although preference would be FreeSync), and 120hz, but I see a lot of those specs on monitors in this segment at the $500-700 range.
Is that 2ms response and "Fast IPS Nano Color" worth an almost 2x premium? It's still an 8-bit panel (16.7 mil colors) and port selection is your standard I/O for this segment (HDMI 1.4 / DP 1.2).
I'm definitely not a HaRdCoRe gamer, and any improvement going sub 4/5ms is negligible and a non-factor for me. Guessing I'm not the target audience for this? Just found it odd that this has gotten mega hype comment wise, as it seems somewhat luke-warm and normal/non-special pricing in my mind?

Legit question man. I can not answer it all with facts, so I will just throw my opinion out there since I purchased one.
I bought this one over the Sammy CRG90 personally because I wanted the GSYNC over the FreeSYNC tech. I thought the Sammy was amazing looking (So BIG), but in the end the reviews I saw talked about tearing even with FreeSYNC ultimate on. The monitor I have now tears quite a bit and my main goal was to fix that issue. I normally run NVIDIA GPU's so GSYNC was something I wanted this time around.
As for not going with the same panel but LG 144Hz FreeSync, I just prefer the look of the dell more, and again wanted that GSYNC. I am also not a fan of how the LG, Asus, Acer panels look like they target the younger crowd.
Dell's warranty is really good and the monitor stand has it all. At the end of the day, I completely agree (and I think Dell does to) that the MSRP of $1,500 is ridiculous. I know the GSYNC chip drives up cost, but that is too much. For me, I would of paid it cause it is what I wanted, but wouldn't be happy. At ~1K, I am happy as it is now lower than the LG.
Tl;Dr - there are many panels out competing for sales. I prefer the look, warranty, and smoother operation of a Dell is all. I replace monitors every ~6 yrs so I tend to purchase what I think holds up best. I think the attention is cause it is 30%+ off and is relatively brand new. I know Dell runs sales a lot, but I did not expect to see this drop this much, this fast.

If we were being perfectly rational, you wouldn't buy this for $1K based on specs, or you wouldn't even buy an ultrawide at all, seeing how 27inch 2K 144Hz panels are sub $400 these days, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Great to hear it fits your use cases and is everything you've wanted. I'll be putting this one on my radar as another one to track and contrast/compare.
