Must activate on Google Fi (Google's cell phone plan) within 30 days or they'll reverse the discount. However, the terms don't say you have to stay on Google Fi....

Can I activate it for their cheapest plan of $20 for a month, and not use it, then cancel it and use the unlocked phone with my current service provider?

If you read the rules I linked to, which I also copied and pasted, all it says is you have to activate on Google Fi.

It doesn't say you have to stay on Google Fi, so you could probably just switch to someone else immediately, though to be safe I am going to switch after one billing cycle.

Ok, the rule didn't say anything about how long we have to be on the plan so I assume it'll work.

From what I know it should work. You can activate it and then cancel or pause the service (it'll be paused for three months and then you can pause it again). You'll have to pay only the prorated charges which could be less than a dollar. I've done it.

Not sure about Google, but it's been same price at Best Buy with Verizon activation forever. Can cancel service immediately after. Only difference is the hard credit pull with Verizon. I'm hoping to see $200 around BF.

I've done a previous Google Fi deal (for a different phone) which required activation and I was charged nothing for service when I activated and cancelled Fi in the same day. I didn't use the service at all during the short time it was active.

I had to do a factory reset to remove the Fi app off of the phone, as it could not be uninstalled (only disabled), otherwise.

Do you think we will? I was really hoping for ~$300 on the XL. I'm a Fi customer, so ideally, straight from Google new would be great. Afraid I will hold out too long and it'll suddenly only be available refurb.

Google Fi runs this deal every year with the release of their new phones. I guarantee you will see same/similar deal from Fi on Pixel 4 by the end of the month.

I'm holding out for BF. I'm guessing there will be similar deals with no strings attached.

Seems like there are always "strings" with these cell phone deals. Either monthly bill credits, port-in requirements, new lines only, etc.

I just want a decent discount on a full price phone. Could be Apple, Google, Samsung...just want a deal on something decent.

My cell service is with Google Fi so this was a respectable deal for me. I went with the 3a XL and ordered a Spigen Rugged Armor case from Amazon for $10.99. Google offered me $12 to trade in my Moto X4 Frown

I am in the southern California area. How is the Google fi service coverage compared with Verizon?

i think they use sprint + tmo, so you should ask your neighbors that have those and combine their responses Smilie
