This, an 8th gen i3 is nowhere close to obsolete on laptop. I could easily see why that deal would appeal to certain users.

Huh? He was comparing two laptops and just telling the guy to get the one feature he wants which was touchscreen. Also stated it won't matter much if it was i3 vs i5 for this low end laptop.

Any tips on ordering so I can score the i5 processor for the i3 cost?
I ordered and only got the i3 for 279.99, but I want the i5.
How do I order so that I get the i5?
I'm curious. Did you order this laptop (the one posted in this discussion)?

This laptop will support 3200mhz RAM. I installed a HyperX 16gb stick (and removed the stock 4gb stock) and it runs great. Cpumark is around 11000 now

Folks need to pause and ask what are they going to do with this 'low end' laptop? Chances are 8th gen or 10th gen, i3 or i5 would not matter. Probably best to get 512GB, 8MB, touchscreen and move on. This race for faster processors is a lost cause. Two years around BF we would be dissing 10th gen.
I agree. I have a 6 year old i7 - 4600u on one laptop and another i5-4200m. Guess what, they both do the every day stuff just as well as the newer CPUs with 8gb ram and a basic SATA SSD. For day-to-day stuff, people will hardly ever notice the difference.

Just a note for everyone who has the laptop, there are driver updates for the firmware, Iris Plus graphics, and synaptics touchpad which you can find in Device Manager. Not sure if it's placebo but the fan doesn't go into jet engine mode as much and the touchpad is a bit more precise.
HP Assist app didn't recommend any driver updates, you're going to HP website directly?

I would definitely look at 1k laptops before you get this because the quality of build, keyboard, and image is priceless for a student. This HP will last for most people 1.5 years until it breaks down.
1.5yrs? gtfo.

Yes, intel upgraded to i5 but costco has it posted as i3 due to some contract agreement, but when u recieve the box on the outside it will say i5 on it.

Please enlighten laymen folk like myself. You say slow but you originally said "quality of build, keyboard, and image "

This CPU and paired up with say 8 or 16GB memory and 512MB RAM won't get miraculously slow will it? If it will then that 1K laptop you recommend (likely running the same h/w) will too right?

Am I missing something?

My daughter currently runs the Lenovo Yoga 730 we spent $699 on last year. She has used it for 1.5 years. Its NOT slow. Barring the known screen flicker problem (which I fixed the 2nd time I think permanently now), there have not been any issues. It came with the i5 8 series and 8GB RAM along with a 256GB .m2 drive.

Hinges breaking, keyboard breaking I get but why will this be slow in a couple of years.

Perhaps the costco Dell $349 with touchscreen, twice ram, 4 times SSD size will not have problem with keyboard, touchpad, and noise... Wish some had model to compare, but evidently special one made for costco.

Did you read what Nitrohamster posted? That's why I asked if he actually ordered the laptop posted here. If he did, then he's one of the very few people who've mentioned getting the i3 instead of the i5. If he didn't, then he ordered a similar laptop that actually has the i3 and he needs to order from the link in the OP to get the i5 or look for the correct item number (#1371252) in Costco.com.
