Has anyone checked that it is an actual full feature i5? Hasn't HP used "defective" chips in the past with less functional cores, etc... and just called it something else?

Having said that, the hype in this thread seems too high like you are getting it for free. What exactly is the savings compared to what you are upgrading to make it how you need anyway? Similar $300 i3 laptops happen all the time, and unless you have a reason to want an i5, you probably won't notice the difference.

I just got mine. It is indeed an i5!

Is there anything I should be doing with this first? I'm already planning to go to win10 home from S.
Image the drive? I always do this before I install things onto a new system.
Buy extra RAM? (I bought the 16GB (2x8gb) G-Skill on Newegg for $50)
Consider researching prices for m.2 SSD?

Anyone else considering the 2x8GB sticks for $50.99 at Newegg: https://slickdeals.net/f/13547833-16gb-2x-8-g-skill-ripjaws-series-ddr4-2666-so-dimm-laptop-ram-51-newegg?src=SiteSearchV2_SearchBarV2Algo1

My wife and I both purchased this laptop, so we would be adding 8GB to each existing 4GB stick, for a total of 12GB on each laptop.

I have no prior experience buying/upgrading RAM. Are prices expected to drop further later in the month around BF?

Thanks!

Do you know what brand the stick is?
I haven't opened mine, but some say Samsung.

You could wait a year and see a few dollars difference UP or DOWN.
Question you should ask yourself is not if it will go down, but based on the price now, are you willing to wait to see? Also, are you willing to run a laptop handcuffed until you get your price?
Sell the 4GB stick for $8 profit and you will only be paying $42 for the dual RAM sticks.

Just saw this update.
I think you'd be better served to add 2x4GB in one and 2x8GB in the other as dual channel is faster. Not sure if a 4x8 config allows for dual channel with just the first 4GB of both sticks. Just a thought.

What's the throttling like?
I was at the store and ran silverbench the in browser cpu stress test.
With battery only it was at around 2.0 ghz, but with the laptop plugged in it seemed like it wanted to go to 3ghz but it was throttling and the score was actually worse.

Can anyone comment on the performance when plugged in?

I went straight to the merchandise pick-up window and asked the lady nicely if I could just see the side of the box before I purchase, because I needed to verify some specs. She grabbed it off the shelf and showed it to me so I could verify that it had the i5 CPU (it says so on the side of the box). I asked her to hold that specific box for me for a few minutes, then went to checkout to make the purchase. Went back to the merchandise pick-up window and picked up the box that she'd set aside.
Imagine the ladies face when you told her to hold that specific box lol she was like " what's so special about this box? They all are the same" ha

I have a general question for anyone who can help me out with some info. I realize this isn't a dedicated gaming laptop however I am interested in running some windows 10 games on it. I do plan on adding a 16GB stick of RAM in the near future. Would that increase the amount of games to choose from? Basically just curious if I could run CS:GO or other similar power intensive games?

Yes it has been confirmed via pics that it is Samsung ram.

It will and drops to the lowest gb.

Do you have a link to the pic of ram stick. Going to pick up another on ebay and I want to make sure it is a matched set. Thanks.

There are a lot of details in my long post from a few days ago, including a photo of the SODIMM that came with the laptop.

Thanks for the feedback. Anyone else know this answer?

Will 1x4GB and 1x8GB be slower than a matched pair?

What drops to the lowest GB? Not sure I understand what you're saying here.
