Just received the computer and ordered this SSD:

And this memory module:

I am still deciding whether to order a second DDR4 module or just to stick with this and the original 4Gb stick. Right now I am at $400, including the heavy NY sales tax, which is an excellent price for the specs.

Better get AX200 too since you are going all out!

You're posting poor terminology and concepts that will be confusing here to others. I know it's confusing to me. LOL.

In regards to total ram capacity, it is not accurate to state that "What most likely will happen ... is that the system defaults to the lower of the two." Are you saying if one 8gb stick is installed in slot 1 and one 4gb stick is installed in slot 2, the laptop will disregard the 8gb stick's capacity and default to the lower 4gb? If so, that makes zero sense and is entirely untrue.

What does make sense and is true is that when you have dual channel ram installed in each slot, the system will perform better in dual channel mode compared to only a single stick installed.

Additionally, matched pairs of ram in dual channel will often perform better than unmatched.

Furthermore, as you briefly noted, installing sticks of ram with different frequencies will typically cause the system to operate at the value of the lower frequency ram, which is the about the only part of your post that you stated accurately.

The bottom line is that one can safely install sticks of ram with different capacity, frequency, brands, etc. and still show significant improvement vs. a single small capacity stick. To optimize performance, a matched pair of dual channel ram is preferred.
Again in real world performance better off paying 63 bucks for 9ne stick compare to 50 bucks for 2 sticks of 8. This way you maximize your savings when you do want to later on add another matching pair and I will have a total of 20 gb of ram then 16 gb.

Do you have a financial interest in selling single sticks of 16GB ram? Like 90% of your posts are trying to convince people to buy it

No, not what I am saying.
It is hard to explain.
The default to lower means lower GB, lower freq.
So, what you say is untrue, too.
4GB + 8GB is not full 12 GB in dual channel.
It's the first 4GB (lower value) + first 4GB (of the 8GB stick) = 8GB in dual channel + remaining 4 GB (of the 8GB stick) NOT in dual channel.

I'm not an EE, so I cannot explain or even confirm the above.
I do know that if you have the following RAM configuration...
4GB 2133MHz
8GB 2666MHz
The system will run at 2133 MHz not at 2133 for 4GB and 2666 for 8GB.
It defaults to the lower freq.

But in real world situation most wont know the difference and buying 1 stick of 16gb with 4gb would be fine too. If gamers want to got hardcore get 32gb or even 64 go .
That is true. Most just want the damn thing to work out of the box and not have to worry about lag or being bogged down in which case, adding a single 16GB stick would work to get 20GB RAM total.

I have deleted all the HP crap and disabled the programs in services. Also disabled all background apps, reporting services, location services, and I had even turned off windows defender, but no matter what as long as I play a youtube video, after a couple of seconds the fan will turn on. I eventually plan on studying in a quiet place, and having the fan come on just from listening to music is annoying. Any solutions out there?

Edit: Also want to mention I had done all updates.

Did you disable fan always on in the bios? Check temps to see if it's overheating?

I had a strange thing happen with mine. In the middle of the night with the laptop closed, the fan kicked on and stayed on for 5 mins. I got annoyed and got up to see. Turns out Windows was doing a self-update...wtf! It seems the options to schedule Windows update isn't as easily turned off as in my desktop.

Not really I just think it is more practical to keep all the components in one area because what happens most of the time is. once end of life of the laptop , most people will have an extra 4gb ram stick laying around somewhere in their house and never to be used again.

Would appreciate someone summarizing best available ram for best price. I have bought two and plan is to move 4GB stick from one to another to make that system 8GB, and buy16GB for other one. I think two stick of 8GB would do it, as I think putting a single 16GB stick with a plan to make 32GB RAM for this system in future might be like driving a Ferrari on a NYC roads.

Would a USB lap desk fan work to
1. Keep the laptop's temp down?
2. be quieter?
https://www.bestbuy.com/site/enhance-gaming-laptop-cooling-pad-stand-with-led-cooler-fans-red/584531... [bestbuy.com]

I used to own one with 2 fans and it was really quiet. Not sure about the one above.

Aside from that, you need to look for ways to reduce the workload and temp.
1. Drop the YouTube resolution. you're probably at 1080p when you don't need to be while STUDYING! Or use your phone to stream music.
2. Use an app like Amazon Music or iHeartRadio which is lower CPU usage.
3. Redo thermal paste with current heatsink.
4. Beef up the heatsink. Copper sheets?
I do not know if there is a way to adjust default temp when the fans kick on.

The cheapest that I've seen was posted earlier.
G.Skill Ripsaw 2x8gb from Newegg.
I checked PartsPicker and nothing cheaper than $55 on PP.
There is Patriot on Amazon for $50, but I think G-Skill is better RAM.

Updates are via ALL SETTINGS > UPDATE & SECURITY in Windows Settings not media creation tool.
