While I was at Costco one of the employees said they printed it as i3 instead of i5 and Costco didn't want to correct it. But it doesn't matter as the label on the box shows i5, so its confirmed. While I got one laptop, there was another guy who snagged two. They still had plenty left (Mall of Georgia Costco).
BS to what that guy said. Never ask that employee for help because he/she does not know what they are talking about.
HP's site lists this model as an i3.
Therefore, Costco got an unexpected upgrade from HP.

Also, no way this i5 laptop configuration is <$300 without a MISTAKE in build.
Even the actual model with an i5 is $400 (on sale), and it does not have the IRIS PLUS GPU, and the i5 is at a slower frequency.

I am interested in the $399.99 version of this at costco that has the 256GB SSD and 8GB ram. The only thing is that it doesn't appear to have a backlit keyboard. Can anyone confirm that? If the keyboard isn't backlit, for those that are familiar with these models, is it possible to swap out the keyboard for a backlit part? What would be the part # for that and where could I find it?
Buy this "i3"instead and upgrade the RAM (add a 4GB stick = $12) and a new m.2 SSD (256GB=$40) and you'll come out cheaper with a better CPU.
The $400 laptop has the i5-1035G1
The "i3" laptop has the i5-1035G4

I was actually looking at the cheaper lenovo c340 going on sale Nov 22, but the heat from this thread!!!
So I bought it!

I was looking for a compact travel computer to take overseas. I want great battery life and didn't necessarily need windows. Just email and browser capability. Could I just install a chrome OS on this or would that be a waste?

Would this also be a candidate for a hackintosh?

Cheers!

Guys, there are more than 1000 comments on this forum, can someone help me here? I got the laptop today and it's an i5 but whats the use if it's keeps freezing when on chrome, whats the first thing I need to do reduce the fan sound and also how to turn off the s mode completely , also about the freezing problem, just turned on the laptop but it seems slow. If someone can summarize that would a great help.

Get it completely up to date including the 10-19 cumulative which requires a manual request in the updater once the others are done. Remove HP bloat. Then add a matching 4gb stick. That should do it.

I picked up an identical stick for $10. Idiots rule!
Could you please put a link or give more information as to what/where to buy the identical stick. I'm the other idiot that would like to do the same. Currently working fine for me with no fan noise. Still in Windows S so it might change. Am surprised how much I can do in S mode. Thanks

Why you are suggesting to buy it nither this i7 or i9 , and even with i5 you must have to upgrade ssd and ram which will again cost 150 to 200 $ so total cost around 500$ ... And if something goes wrong during upgrade .. warranty don't cover .. do you still think this is a great deal , please comment.

All you need to do is add a $12 stick of ram. Anything beyond this would be nice but that alone makes this the best $300 laptop ever.

Anyone wonder what happens if you try to do a warranty repair and your receipt says i3 while the laptop is an i5?

Nothing. HP tracks the exact specs of every machine. They will fix it just like and build to order they ever sold. That is why it says i5 on the box.

Hey did you restart your computer! Is windows updating in your background!

Win10 is NOTORIOUS for doing this.
1. It will download the update to your SSD without your knowledge and take up all available space EVEN IF THERE'S NOT ENOUGH! (it will just pause and you'd be left with like 2 GB). And then it won't finish until you free up storage. Once the update is complete, you will miraculously have like 35 GB of free space. I HATE HATE HATE this about Win 10.
2. In the meantime, while it is downloading, your system may slow to a crawl.

Anyone measure the screen ? what's the Gamut/ Contrast ratio on this panel ?

Was like 57 or 59%. Contrast is par for IPS. It does not look like a Surface or Macbook...However, way better than 95% of Chromebooks and sub $300 windows machines
