this cable could be used for adding an extra SSD after some modifications, just need someone to confirm.

i think the deal might be dead or dying in store. stopped by costco on the way home from work and tried to buy the laptop. they said 3 hours ago they discovered it was the wrong product and was an i5 and not an i3 like advertised and notified corporate. they had 46 in stock still.

i asked to speak to a manager and asked him if he would sell it to me since they still had the display one listed. i just said "if it was noticed 3 hours ago as a price or item mistake wouldn't you have taken the display and price tag away?" i wasn't pissed or anything, just asked and told him i was cool if he didn't want to sell it to me and he'd save me $300 haha. he gave it to me and removed the demo unit from the display. if i didn't get it i would have tried another costco tomorrow.

Got mine in the mail and played with it for 30 minutes and i am returning it. The fan is awfully loud for no reason and mouse pad feels like it's falling off.

It's definitely a work-in-progress. Check out the previous posts on how to making the fan noise more manageable. There might not be a quick fix for the mouse pad though. I haven't gotten mine yet so will have to see whether these are enough to break the deal for me.

I just tried to install a second HDD but the cable from the previous gen doesn't fit the socket provided. Any idea what this socket is for?

Been waiting to see if anyone can confirm if a 2nd HDD/SSD can be installed on this laptop. Have been holding off to purchase this to replace my mom's laptop, as she needs additional storage space for all her media files.

Pls PM me if anyone successfully adds a 2nd HDD/SDD to this laptop.

For everyone that is trying to make fans run less,

First of all this is i5 and powerfull, even that is only 15W CPU it will produce heat, thats 4 cores - 8 threats, double the i3

If you realy want to make a litle bit of temperature drop, google some repaste youtube videos and do that, should drop temps 5-10° and somehow reduce the need of the fans to run.

Obviously debloating will help, because CPU will have to work less, so unninstall programs you wont be using, specialy HP stuff and Antivirus, only leave HP assistant for the drivers in future.

The guy that said open Task Manager and turn off the 4 HP services that are running from post #494 i see mentioned everywhere, thats cool and all but when you reboot they will be back up and running..

What you need to do is this:

1. Click on start Menu and navigate to "Windows System" folder
2. Expand it and click on "Run" program
3. Type "msconfig" (without the " ") and hit Enter
4. A new window will open, navigate to "Services" Tab
5. Click on the "Status" tab of that window and sort it by Running
6. There you will see the 4 HP Services running, uncheck the checkmarks
7. Hit "Apply"
8. Restart

Attaching Screenshot of it, take a look

Those will not be back unless you repeat this process above and check the boxes once again.

All and all, it does run hot, i play some WoW on it, and runs it at 60 frames 1080p on minimal setting with just the 4GB RAM it came with, but does get realy hot..

For the price of $280+tax it cant be beat, and wont be a better deal this year, this was like price mistake by $150+
If you using it on a desk, not burning your lap, and dont mind the fans when the CPU is under load its great, otherwise might have to return it, is just not cooling well for heavier work.

OK now give me some internet points Big Grin

Display isnt great, but I think good enough. I don't plan on watching netflix with it or anything, just IE and word. Its dimmer than my other displays I have and has black crush when watching movies (most displays have this btw.)...

Same here about the fan issue. Did everything that was mentioned in this whole thread, and I read the whole thing in hopes that there was a solution, instead of just minimizing the noise. Guess the i5 is just too powerful without proper cooling. Loved almost everything about the laptop too; size, keyboard, (not the trackpad), upgradability, screen.

I believe the Heatsink and fan for all processors with the same TDP are usually the same - especially in laptops.
does an i5 processor normally have a larger heatsink or fan compred to this?

i did not find any images of the motherboard on the 1035g1 @ $399 thread...

I repasted it. I only got a few degrees of improvement. I've attached a picture of the heatsink with the original paste. You can see the dies were not even properly centered within the heatsink.

You should sue Costco for false advertising.
