How's the build quality? (ie touchpad, fan noise, keyboard, etc)
All those are a problem with the HP deal at Costco.
Update:
I went to my local Costco and they had HP in stock with the i5. The build quality is definitely a step up from this Dell. The screen is light years better and worth the extra cost. I'm taking the Dell back to Walmart.

Not sure what to say on build quality other than it feels like a cheap, plastic laptop. The top cover and keyboard surface area is textured. It seems to pick up fingerprints on the top the keyboard area. The touchpad makes a cheap, plastic sounding click when clicking. It would not be great in some place that required quiet. The keyboard makes sorta mushy clicks but less intrusive than the touchbad. I would get an external mouse for this laptop. The base part of the computer seems solid but the screen cover flexes inward when pressed. I would not want anything to press into it. The fan kicks on often and is a typical fan whir noise. It meets $250 expectations.
This Dell ships with Windows 10 in S mode where you can only use apps and programs from the Microsoft Store. You can get out of S mode by going into settings and upgrades and security. My problem trying to do this was it would do it because my Windows license wasn't activated properly when setting up the computer (lame). I clicked the fix and it activated and the exit out of S mode option appears.

lay off the henny bruh. what do you expect for $250-280
if you want better build quality, touchpad, less fan noise and better keyboard get the Motile at walmart for $250-300 , but you'll be getting inferior processing power.
why do people insist on trying to get it all or expecting $1000 quality and performance laptop from a $250-280 machine
a nice bonus that this dell also comes with the i5, but the (1366 x 768) screen is a turn off. Also look at the chassis design with the huge bezels. I've played around with a dell inspiron 14 (not this particular config) but same line. and i think its fine, just like I think the HP is fine, but i know that im dealing with $300~ laptops. I feel you have to lower yourr standards when expecing to only pay $250-280
I've bought the HP from costco - No second storage option.
Apart from the 1080 screen, this looks like a great deal too.
Add some RAM and some storage in the 2.5 inch bay and this should make a good workstation.

My expectations are very simple. I want to know the specific tradeoffs in buying this and other sub $300 machines. Some I can live with and others I absolutely won't (ex: noisy trackpad/fan and crap keyboard).
These are good deals but looks like I better dig deeper and set my sights on an upcoming Thinkpad deal.
It's 10th Gen i3, which is actually pretty fast (PassMark around 5k) and paired with an SSD it will be plenty for basic productivity tasks.
Dell's build quality is a step above HP as well (for those looking to compare to the Costco deal). I'd rank build quality for major OEMs like this: 1) Lenovo 2) Dell 3) HP
If you have Costco membership, they have a similar spec HP one with Full HD for $30 more. Thats better choice. It seems sold out online now, but the stores have them in stock.

The box on this says i3 but it actually is an i5, photos have been posted to prove this.
