This is the lowest price (per CCC) in over 1 year for this cooler which is great for sous vide. You can modify (cut a hole in) the lid so it's super snug with the sous vide cooker or you can just set the cover on 90% of the way and there'll be a little gap which you can cover with a towel.

For sous vide, this is great for larger roasts or baby back ribs (I can cook ~5 ribs this way using a rack to put them on their sides.)

33 qt cooler [amazon.com] NLA

The smaller stacker [amazon.com] cooler is almost as much (although a good price at $16.41), but it uses less water and is great for 3-5 lb roasts, steaks, etc.

NLA but see Front Page post for another purchasing option

Of course the cooker keeps the temperature. That's literally its only function. But without any insulation in your container the cooker has to work more frequently due to heat loss which costs more money (probably not much over time).

I'm about $100 into this sous vide thing with the cooker and two of these coolers (the 24 can one and this 33 quart one) and a 12 qt Rubbermaid container and have been pretty happy with the setup and the results. But, like coffee: if you're happy with what you like, I'm not going to try to change that.

Cosign. 2 3/8 hole. It makes sous vide'ing way more efficient and is also more effective since the temperature stays consistent better.

Yes. It's a popular method because the cooler holds the heat in well since it is insulated and, once you cut the top to fit around the Sous Vide cooker, you don't lose a lot of heat or water so the cooker doesn't have to work as hard to maintain the water temperature. If you just cook in a regular stock pot you lose some water over time and a lot of your heat escapes so you have to rig foil or some kind of cover to help. This makes the Sous Vide into more of a cooking system and reduces the burden on the heating element as well. My brother recently got me to pick up the 24-can version of this to use with my Sous Vide.

Yes I do. I'm pretty new to this, but in my first test a 26 hour cook (beef roast) with the kill-a-watt monitor on my 1000 watt cooker in the 24 can stacker cooler, it only used 2.5 kWh (about $0.28) of electricity and there was almost no evaporation.

You can see from the price drop chart that the price hasn't been this low or lower in over a year.

I mean, I use a cheap ass clear rubbermaid container off amazon, and you can buy custom molded container lids for cheap to go with it (with a combined cost less than $20). No point in going through modifying a cooler. My Anova sous vide cooks everything just fine and has no issue "keeping temp". I can make 6 ribeyes and temperature retention is never the problem.

I've been needing a larger vessel for the holidays. This or the 22qt Rubbermaid (which is about twice the price including lid)?

For sous vide you can use waterballs to keep the temp. It gives you the option to cook in anything. It's what I use and it works great.

Do these also function well as weights to keep bags submerged?

The customer review images on the smaller 24 can stacker one are amazing. I feel like such a novice using my Joule in a Rubbermaid container...

Definitely keeping this in mind for next spring/summer!
