I own this, it is a very nice receiver. There is not another receiver anywhere close to this price that has Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision AND is THX certified. The power is more than most in this range, 7 HDMI IN and 2 OUT and a fully independent Zone 2. At this price and with the features it has, makes it an incredible value.
They're pretty close as features go. The biggest difference is the 696 has 4k upscaling. Not sure if that makes any noticeable difference. Long ago I had an expensive DVD player with upscaling and I didn't notice anything different. It's hard to imagine 1080i looking like 4k. You'd think all mid level 4k TVs would have that built it if it made a difference. I can't find a better value in this price range.
Still regretting purchasing an Onkyo receiver two years in. Even after having the network chip/board replaced under warranty the network constantly drops and the only way to fix it is to hard reset the device. Never again. Don't do this to yourself!

Wrong model number in title- I see a price of $580 for the TX-NR696. The $250 price is for one of the lower end models.

FYI, I wanted eARC and google assistant support, so I ended up ordering the Denon AVR-S650H from Costco for 269. If you need 7.2, the Denon AVR-S750H is 339.
