Why would anyone need this, I use my iPhone to record everything. Always good quality.
I'm guessing for recording music (personal performances, kids performances, etc), for lectures, etc

definitely a higher audio quality than a smartphone would be able to do

Not really. 44.1khz vs 192khz is science. But I get your point. I like how 12 bit sampling sounds

No XLR inputs or Phantom power kill this item for me. I'd spend the extra on a Tascam DR-40 or 40x, which has great built in mics, 2 XLR inputs, and Phantom power.

You cant make asmr with your iphone~ You also don't see people using iphones to record interviews and podcasts for a reason...

Bit-depth, sampling frequency, and signal-to-noise ratio are very objective.

Recording sounds is a science in its own right.

I think this compares closer to like a DR07X rather than a DR40

Looks like a good deal but reviews on Amazon point on quite a few problems. What about this device https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N3FC...UTF8&psc=1 anyone used both?

True, different class of device, but we're only talking $25 for a serious upgrade.

https://www.sony.com/electronics/hi-res-audio-mp3-cd-sound-quality-comparison

Flatter 20-20khz mic response without the rolloff of the iPhone mic, stereo Mic vs mono, hires 96khz 24-bit recordings (vs 48khz 16-bit), 15 hour non-stop recordings, better mics likely handling higher dB sounds without distortion and less noise, etc.

Ie. It records better sounds with less distortion and noise than that lame iPhone!

...

That said, iPhones have never been known for High Quality audio mics.

Heck, even my old LG G6 has higher quality mics with a 129dB spl max, can do wav/flac 192Khz 24-bit recordings.

https://www.neumann.com/homestudio/en/what-does-maximum-sound-pressure-level-max-spl-mean

Ie. A handful of phones do far better than iPhones today, and dedicated audio recorders do even better.

...

Xlr only needed if you're going to spend money on high quality external mics for recording. Ie. You will spend more money on the mic than this recorder.
At that point, might as well start off with the latest zoom recorders as the baseline at several hundred, then sky is the limit.
https://www.zoom-na.com

Ie. If you're going to use an external mic that costs money, no point skimping on a cheap recorder that won't get you the best sound quality recording out of that mic.
