The screen is made this way to save battery life. I have had my Fenix 3 Saphire for 3 years and wear It daily. It will still hold a charge for over a week. The watch gets beat on 4 days a weak in a manufacturing facility and the saphire glass doesn't have a single scratch. Even after a 10 foot drop landing face down on a concrete floor. It has a light you can turn on when running at night.

I got one a couple of weeks ago from the last sale at this price. Overall very good performance but one issue that is a deal breaker for me: the screen sucks. It is dim and grainy and has a massive bezel. It is very hard to read when running in the dark and even in the day the colors are washed and the low resolution and small size (remember the huge bezel) make maps pretty useless. The OLED on my Frontier S3 is a million times better.

Just wanted to share this, as for some reason this is rarely mentioned in the online reviews. Perhaps Garmin loyals are used to 10-year old display tech or perhaps I am spoiled by my S3.

I have this watch and I love it. I paid a little more than this for a refurb last year.

The battery goes for a week or two before it needs charging, depending on how much I use fitness tracking and GPS. The GPS and maps are fun and useful most of the time.

One caveat - don't make it your only source of location information when you're in the backcountry because the GPS is hit and miss. Most of the time it's fine but I've definitely seen it reflect my position well off of the mark, especially while backpacking in canyons. I've heard the 5 plus series and 6 series improved GPS and HR, and someday I'll upgrade and find out for myself!

If I didn't absolutely need music during workouts this is a good deal combined with cash back?

I own this but I prefer my bit old Forerunner 735xt as daily driver. One and only caveat with 735xt is not having barometric altimeter to count stairs.

So many garmin watches to chose from. Which is the best one for a runner? My son runs track and XC.

If you are looking to get one just for running the 245 would be the base model to look for. Great watch. If you want more bells and whistles there a lot of options
