Chase Checking & Savings $900 Bonus Offer

I'm not sure if this was targeted or not. It was an offer under my Marriott Chase credit card account. You get $900 cash back when you open a checking and savings account through the link. Sure the interest rates are crap...but once you get your $900 after 3 months, you can close accounts and move elsewhere. Seems like a killer deal...unless I'm missing something? https://accounts.chase.com/consum...px=PT22272

"To receive the $300 checking bonus: 1) Open a new Chase Total Checking account, which is subject to approval; AND 2) Have your direct deposit made to this account within 90 days of account opening. Your direct deposit needs to be an electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security) from your employer or the government. Person to Person payments (such as Chase Quickpay® with Zelle®) are not considered a direct deposit. After you have completed all the above checking requirements, we'll deposit the bonus in your new account within 10 business days. To receive the $200 savings bonus: 1) Open a new Chase SavingsSM account, which is subject to approval; 2) Deposit a total of $15,000 or more in new money into the new savings account within 20 business days of account opening; AND 3) Maintain at least a $15,000 balance for 90 days from the date of deposit. The new money cannot be funds held by you at Chase or its affiliates. After you have completed all the above savings requirements, we'll deposit the bonus in your new account within 10 business days. To receive the extra $400 bonus: You must open the checking and savings account at the same time and complete all requirements above for BOTH the checking bonus and savings bonus. After you have completed all requirements, we will deposit the remaining bonus due in your new checking account within 10 business days."

Setup a direct deposit of $500 a month or have a balance of over $1500 to avoid fees on checking. And maintain balance of over $300 on savings to avoid fees.

I assume this $900 will be taxable? (unlike cc bonuses). Does Chase send out a 1099?

^^ never mind. It's taxable and Chase will send out a 1099INT.

Bonuses are considered interest and will be reported on IRS Form 1099-INT (or Form 1042-S, if applicable).

So the benefit will likely be closer to $500 after taxes less the opportunity cost of parking $15k in an account paying almost 0% interest. Assuming you can earn around 2% elsewhere that's around $75 lost for this 90 days. So this deal nets out to be closer to $400-500 depending on your tax bracket + hoops to jump thru. Food for thought.

Any interest you earned at other banks would be taxed as well. That $75 in interest wouldn't be tax free.

You know the interest you get other places also would get a 1099, right? And you're saying the deal nets to $400-$500 from $900? That's a tax rate of 40%+. My tax rate is closer to 20% after deductions.

I'm planning to visit a Chase branch and open the accounts there.

I have frozen my credit...does anyone know which credit agency Chase uses, that way I can thaw that credit?

If you are trying to trigger direct deposit bonus using ACH transfer, you can try from Discover as a recurring scheduled transfer (not as one-time transfer)
One-time transfer shows up in Chase as "P2P" ACH credit - no bonus triggered
Recurring scheduled transfer shows up as "PREARRANGE PPD" ACH Credit - bonus is triggered

Caught up on all requests again.

FYI, I tried to deposit the check on the Chase app, and it won't allow over I think it said $2k a day / $5k a month. So I need to go to a branch location to get this $15k into savings. Just FYI for everyone. Minor inconvenience to earn $900 Smilie

Wouldn't you have to put 15K in savings, and 15K in checking to get the full 900 bonus? The 200 savings bonus is straight forward. The extra $400 bonus says "open the checking and savings account at the same time and complete all requirements above for BOTH the checking bonus and savings bonus." So would need to park 30K total and a direct deposit for the full $900 bonus, or am I the only one reading it that way?

Does it literally say "bonus is triggered" in your account? Like you can confirm when you've ,satisfied the direct deposit requirement?
