So serious question, what happens to equipment if you just leave it in a bag? I can understand film getting ruined by moisture but I live in a semi arid environment. Don't see the point.

Mold could potentially develop inside lenses if left in dark areas, especially if it gets wet or is in a humid environment most of the time.

Edit: Unlikely to happen in most real world cases though. Unless your gear is constantly getting soaked and sitting in the dark for long periods of time.

If you are willing to spend $5k+ on a lens this is a pretty small investment if you are one to be rougher on things.

Is it a bitch to clean? I mean I'm sure you have to tear apart the camera a bit.

Yeah, I'm not there yet. I suppose a couple of wedding shoots would justify an investment to protect your gear with something heavy duty. For me I still have a 60D and a sling bag.

A lens? I wouldn't want to do it. I've also heard stories of some older equipment being impossible to remove mold once it has occurred due to its construction.

Quick tip. If you ever get a lens wet. Leave it in the window sill with the front cap off for a day. That should be enough to remove any moisture that may have gotten in.

Nothing. The worry/fear mongering is that high moisture environments will allow moisture to seep into the camera and lenses and ruin the electronics and start mold. I guess this is deal in that the cabinet gives you a place to store your gear? For more practical use you're better off buying the Eva-dry moisture absorbers from Costco when they go on sale for $18 for the two pack. This essentially uses them but just cycles between the two to turn one on when the other one is working, so I guess if you really need something like this a cabinet and using power to keep this dehumidified year round is a deal?

I agree, but I picked up one anyways.
For the price, it's a nice place to store my camera and lenses instead of in my camera bag in the closet. The price is low enough to justify it over desiccant packs that need to be continuously renewed/replaced.

I'm getting it more for show, but some peace of mind.

The mold gets inside the lens. Most modern lenses are not designed to be taken apart by anyone except a technician.

I have a couple really old "art" lenses that have mold in them and for my use, it doesn't make a difference since I have them just because they are fun and they were sub $50.

Alot of repair shops won't even touch a lens with mold in it...they don't want to risk those spores affecting their other, more expensive lenses. For a shop or owner with a $10k Angenieux, $50k Cooke kit, or possibly a $100 Cabrio...this is a no brainier. But if you don't have a lens that costs as much as a car and you're not in a super humid environment, a moisture absorbent pack is just fine.

Hi. I use 2 or 3 silica gel packets (drying agent) to make the air dry inside my camera bag. Is that enough for the camera? It's a 600D though.

Yeah you are good. Most of the concern is for older lenses/gear. Any type of growth in a recently made lens would be a worst case scenario and rare.

The mfg'ing process of the cameras require cleanroom environments. Literally zero dust. You're in and out of 3 cleanroom filtration rooms before you even enter "the" cleanroom.

It's all up to you, protect your gear or not protect your gear. The silica desiccants takes power to "recharge" via the microwave. It takes WAY more electricity to do. Also, you don't know the humidity of your container, it may be too dry for the rubber grips etc. but like I said, it's all up to you how much protection you want for your gear. $150 (80L) to shove all my gears into and not having to recharge the desiccants seems to fit my bill nicely.

I didn't have any issues with my modern lenses in CA, but these things develop over time. So I picked up the 80L version during the last sale. It seems to have the best $/Volume ratio until you get to the really big ones. It takes almost no electricity, less than 10watts, many things use more.

from my post last year:

80L and 600L have the best $$$/liter ratio.

18L [bhphotovideo.com] $69.95 $3.89 / Liter
30L [bhphotovideo.com] $89.95 $3 / Liter
50L [bhphotovideo.com] $119.95 $2.4 / Liter
80L [bhphotovideo.com] $149.95 $1.87 / Liter
120L [bhphotovideo.com] $249.95 $2.08 / Liter
180L [bhphotovideo.com] $399.95 $2.22 / Liter
235L [bhphotovideo.com] $449.95 $1.91 / Liter
600L [bhphotovideo.com] $999.95 $1.67 / Liter
