this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

What's the consensus here after using it for a few weeks? Return or keep?

I have only had mine for about a week. Currently leaning towards keeping.

Just had mines for about a week. Haven't had a lot of time with it since its the hollidays. My initial thoughts were bad since the laptop froze and gave me the black screen a few times. After a few updates the problem hasnt happen gor a while now. Chrome seems to always crash on it for some reason so Im using firefox. I really like the look and feel of it, for the price it cant be beat. I only paid 240 for the r5 version so there is really no point in returning as I know I won't find a better deal out there. As to how I got the 240 price, I used a friend's associate discount and then walmart gave me a 30 dollar promo code since it didn't arrice on time after I complained to customer service about my order.

I have a L-390 ThinkPad coming next week. I'll see if it's worth $530 and then return one of them.

I hope they continue the Motile line. If they review our posts Gen 2 should be be a better system.

Does anyone know how to change the default fan mode to Basic?
Fn+ F5 changes between Basic mode and Silent mode fan speed.

Hey - can you point me to a post and/or instruction to open the laptop? Are there any screws that's not visible and best way/tool to pry? How many RMA slots are there? TIA!

one of my screws got stripped on corner...located near the THX logo. tried rubberband trick...didnt work. any suggestion?

despite that, i was able to get to the RAM and successfully installed 16 GB RAM. this is what i installed...
https://www.amazon.com/Patriot-3000MHz-SODIMM-Memory-Module/dp/B07QNS88J8/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=16GB+s... [amazon.com]

laptop recognizes it.."Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 16.0 GB"
is there anything i should set different to get optimal performance?

i also got a wifi card to swap out, but there appears to be a screw i need to loosen that holds it in place. i'm tempted to try to get to it...gonna hold off until i can completely remove the bottom panel.

I like the laptop but the fan noise is annoying. Fresh install with only Firefox running it still turns on the fan! Walmart gives us until the 25th of January to return.. maybe some bios updates from Motile or AMD might fix this by then but I do doubt it.

to open the laptop, use a philip #0 screwdriver, once all six screws are out, you need a plastic pry tool such as a spudger, guitar pick or the edge of a credit card. gently work your way into the space between the edge of the back cover and the laptop body., gently pry and work your way around the edge, I found it helpful to start at the back edge where the vent is, or in a corner.

Then keep in silent mode instead of basic. (Fn + F5)

Merely opening the lid or touching the touchpad won't wake it up. you have to press a key

What various issues are you getting. Please describe as it will be useful for us to know too. thanks.

I have personally tested two different R5 ones. I am running clean installed w10 with latest amd chipset and graphic drivers from amd site.

Two issues i have and they were both on the two R5 i tested
1. Once a while, selecting restart in windows will place it in a hang state where after it shows the blue screen saying restarting then it goes to the black screen after that but will not go to the boot screen. So it basically stop continuing on the restart sequence after that. Then i have to press the power button and hold it down to shut off to turn on.

2. HDMI output is very temperatmental. with ext monitor blanking out intermittently. Sometimes happened when playing video with chrome, other time it just happened without chrome. Sometimes it works perfectly and sometimes it doesn't.

ditto. This thing is limited to single channel ram as well as 2400 so you are not gonna be able to get the best speed out of vega or improve it by adding more ram (unless your applications really need more ram).. also i tested using 2133 vs 2666 ram with userbenchmark. nothing really changed under the cpu and gpu marks. memory bench does obviously shows some difference. Summary: using 2133 vs 2400 vs 2666 memory on this thing won't make any real world difference.

Chi Mei N140HCA-EAC, IPS, CMN14D4 according to notebookcheck

I think i agree the QC on this leaves much to be desired. It seems not so much on the construction itself as i haven't heard anyone says theirs comes undone. I think a lot of the bad stuffs comes in the form of the compnonents being suboptimal. no matter how well it's put together, if the components are craps to start with, thing won't run well.
I have the R3 version - is there really no point in upgrading the RAM ? Don't expect to do much gaming but just for general performance.

having at least 8gb ram always good because that's about the minimum you need to be able to run without virtual memory. 16gb ram even better if you have a lot of windows open

picked up the laptop today, it's amazing value.
black ryzen 5 model.
screen is good, keyboard is good, mouse good, back-light good, performance is good.
laptop is light and feels great.
for $300; I doubt there is a better value.

While unplugged and idle (cpu utilization less than 10% -- check this in the Windows Task Manager) the processor temperature should be around 40°C or less with the fan off. You can check the CPU temperature using a utility like HWMonitor. Mine has been pretty much silent in silent mode, the fan rarely comes on. The fan kicks on for me when the CPU hits 70°C in silent mode.
